Job summary

The Institute of Human Virology (IHV) in Baltimore is recruiting a part-time Medical Assistant (32 hours per week) to support clinical and clerical patient care under supervision. The role includes assisting with examinations, routine testing, medication administration, and patient instruction clarification.

Responsibilities

  • Elicits and documents patient's chief complaint.
  • Prepares patient and assists with examination.
  • Performs routine office testing and basic examinations.
  • Assists with minor surgical procedures and diagnostic procedures.
  • Prepares and administers medications, records doses.
  • Clarifies patient instructions for tests and medications.
  • Draws blood and processes lab specimens.
  • Maintains examination and treatment areas and sterilizes instruments.
  • Performs clerical duties including phones, scheduling, and patient flow.

Job description

The Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is recruiting for aPart-Time Medical Assistant. Under direct supervision, theMedical Assistant assists medical personnel with the clinical andclerical responsibilities of patient care.

*This is a part-time (32 hours per week) position.

Primary Duties:
  1. Elicits and documents patient's chief complaint.
  2. Prepares patient and assists with examination.
  3. Performs routine office testing such as blood pressure, vision,hearing, urinalysis, electrocardiogram, rapid strep screen,dextrostix, and spun hematocrit.
  4. Assists with minor surgical and other procedures such assigmoidoscopy, colposcopy, liquid nitrogen therapy, and pelvicexamination.
  5. Prepares and administers medications including injections asdirected. Keeps records of medication given.
  6. Assists with clarification of patient instructions ondiagnostic test preparation and medication administration.
  7. Draws blood, collects and processes laboratory specimens, andrecords results.
  8. Prepares and maintains examination and treatment areasincluding necessary supplies. Sterilized instruments andequipment.
  9. Performs clerical duties such as answering phones, greeting,and directing clients, scheduling, and monitoring appointments,obtaining, and processing information.

Qualifications :

Education: High School Diploma or GED and successfulcompletion of an accredited program for Medical Assistants.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: General knowledge of the principles of aseptic techniques andinfection control including blood and body fluid precautions.General knowledge, skill and ability to administer medications,assist with treatments, and operate medical equipment. Generalknowledge of and ability to meet the requirements for compliancewith confidentiality of records and communications regardingclients. Skill and ability to use aseptic and sterile techniques;to interact with the public, health care providers, agencies, andfacilities. Ability to perform extensive standing and walking; tocommunicate effectively both orally and in writing; to operatestandard office equipment.

Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional relatedexperience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance ofthe work of the job class may be substituted for the education orexperience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 collegecredits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Pro-Rated Hiring Range (@ .80 FTE/32 hrs. per week): $38,080 -$40,000, commensurate with education and experience
