Job summary

West Virginia University Health System is seeking a Medical Assistant to perform basic nursing skills and assist physicians and registered nurses under supervision.

Responsibilities include greeting patients, room preparation, taking vital signs, assisting with exams, scheduling, documentation, and maintaining equipment. BLS certification within 30 days of hire is required; HS diploma or MA program graduate preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent; MA program graduate or 1 year clinical experience.
• BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
• Healthcare education coursework preferred; 1 year healthcare experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepares exam rooms for patients and ensures supplies are available.
• Assists with exams, tests, and procedures and supports providers.
• Schedules appointments and sets up referrals as needed.
• Maintains patient documentation and assists with administrative tasks.
• Maintains equipment and quality control logs.

Job description

Performs basic nursing skills, and/or serves under the direction and supervision of the practice physician and/or registered nursing staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program OR one (1) year of experience in a clinical setting.
• Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Completion of healthcare education coursework.
• 1.One (1) year of healthcare experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Greets and escorts patient to exam rooms; prepares for physician visit by obtaining initial information and vital signs.
• Prepares exam rooms for patients with attention to cleanliness and availability of supplies.
• Assists with and/or performs exams, tests, and procedures.
• Schedules appointments and sets up referral contacts as needed.
• Assists provider during patient examinations and procedures.
• Educates patients on follow up expectations.
• Maintains quality control testing logs as required.
• Ensures all medical equipment is in proper working condition.
• Assists patients with completion of medical documentation.
• Assists with office administrative tasks to include but not limited to answering phones, taking messages, performing office related task (copying, printing, data entry, etc.) and assisting with depositing of cash and other closing duties.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• MEDIUM WORK - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).
• Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 8-12 hour shift.
