Job description

Job Description

Performs patient care under the physician's/nurse's direct supervision. Duties include preparing patients for physicians, administering treatments, obtaining and recording diagnostic laboratory test results. Assists in coordinating the organization of care to meet patient needs, including preparing, organizing, and filing reports into the medical record.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Collaborates with members of the healthcare team to coordinate and implement patient care plans; records reason for visit and related patient information for review.
  2. Performs vital signs, height, weight, and screening procedures, which may include head circumference, audiometry, and vision testing; documents findings in the medical record.
  3. Collects and assists providers in specimen collection, using appropriate protocols such as infection control; completes requisitions, labels, and routes specimens according to standard procedures.
  4. Performs and documents daily controls and calibration of laboratory equipment; reports inaccuracies to the supervisor.
  5. Performs electrocardiograms and phlebotomy as per provider orders; adheres to infection control standards including hand hygiene, PPE use, patient isolation, and equipment sterilization.
  6. Assists physicians and nurses with procedures like lumbar puncture and pelvic exams, following infection control, universal protocol, and patient identification standards; prepares supplies, ensures patient comfort, and assists post-procedure.
  7. Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of examination rooms; stocks supplies and maintains logs and equipment checks.
  8. Participates in pre-visit chart preparation by ensuring lab results and documentation are available for review (for paper records).
  9. Performs clerical tasks such as filing, insurance processing, financial record preparation, photocopying, answering phones, and patient flow management.
  10. Performs other duties as required. All responsibilities are considered essential under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Job Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program with certification, or 1-3 years of experience as a medical assistant, EMT, or CNA with valid certification, or successful completion of the Northwell Health Medical Assistant training program.
