Job summary

Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio is seeking a Medical Assistant to provide clinical and administrative support to patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse. The role includes taking vital signs, phlebotomy, EHR documentation in EPIC, and helping prepare examination rooms.

You will assist with data collection for care plans, coordinate with the care team, perform routine office duties, and support scheduling and patient tracking.

Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy experience and terminology knowledge required.
  • Experience in healthcare settings preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Experience with EPIC or similar EMR systems preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; MA program completion required.
  • BLS certification required; MA certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure.
  • Collects data contributing to assessment and discharge planning under supervision of the Licensed Nurse.
  • Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy.
  • Communicates patient findings to the Provider/Licensed Nurse using proper documentation processes.
  • Accurate and timely documentation of care in EPIC system.
  • Performs scheduling, visit prep, co-pay collection, and patient tracking.
  • Performs department-specific clinical duties (POCT, hearing/vision screenings) and other procedures.
  • Handles routine office tasks (faxes, copying, filing).
  • Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms; maintains patient relations.
  • Follows safety policies to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Summary:

The Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support for patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

Responsibilities:

  1. Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure
  2. Collects data that contributes to the assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge plans, under the direction of the Licensed Nurse
  3. Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
  4. Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
  5. Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system
  6. Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling, visit preparation, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed
  7. Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures
  8. Performs routine task and general office duties such as faxing, copying, filing, etc. as needed
  9. Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms
  10. Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues
  11. Follows safety policies and procedures in the delivery of care to assure a safe environment for patients, families, and other staff members
  12. Other duties assigned

Other information:

Technical Expertise

  1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
  2. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
  3. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
  4. Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  5. Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.

Education and Experience

  1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
  3. Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  4. Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  5. Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
  6. Years of experience supervising: None.
