Job summary

Akron Children's Hospital is seeking a Medical Assistant to provide clinical and administrative support under a Provider or Licensed Nurse. The role is onsite in Ohio with a 0.9FTE schedule, Monday through Friday and rotating Saturdays.

The position emphasizes phlebotomy, vital signs, data collection for care plans, specimen handling, and documentation in the EPIC system. Strong knowledge of medical terminology and MS Office is required; BLS certification is mandatory.

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant program or EMT/Paramedic program is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association is required.
  • Medical Assistant certification is preferred.
  • No prior years of experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examination and record vital signs.
  • Perform phlebotomy as needed and administer medications as directed by Providers.
  • Collect, process, and submit laboratory specimens per policy.
  • Document care in EPIC and communicate findings to Providers.
  • Schedule appointments, assist with visit prep, and collect co-pays as needed.
  • Perform department-specific duties such as POCT and basic screenings.
  • Maintain exam rooms and support staff with routine office tasks.
  • Develop positive relationships with patients and families.
  • Follow safety policies to ensure a safe care environment.

Summary:

The Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support for patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

Responsibilities:
  1. Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure
  2. Collects data that contributes to the assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge plans, under the direction of the Licensed Nurse
  3. Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
  4. Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
  5. Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system
  6. Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling, visit preparation, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed
  7. Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures
  8. Performs routine task and general office duties such as faxing, copying, filing, etc. as needed
  9. Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms
  10. Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues
  11. Follows safety policies and procedures in the delivery of care to assure a safe environment for patients, families, and other staff members

Other information:
Technical Expertise
  1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
  2. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
  3. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
  4. Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  5. Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.
Education and Experience
  1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
  3. Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  4. Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  5. Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
  6. Years of experience supervising: None.
