Description
- The Medical Assistant performs basic direct patient care activities, such as lab tests, treatments, and medication/immunization administration. These are performed under the direction of the Nurse and/or the physician in preparation for the patient's examination and treatment. The incumbent carries out clerical activities, quality control activities, performance improvement initiatives, etc., in support of the physician practice as assigned. This position also serves as a resource for the clerical/clinical staff in the practice.
Essential Job Functions
- Deliver direct and indirect patient care in accordance with hospital/physician practices policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Assist in collecting patient healthcare data, including vital signs, weight, chief complaint, and pain assessment as directed.
- Complete patient care treatments and testing as ordered.
- Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and timely.
- Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
- Communicate pertinent information of actual or potential problems to the physician or nurse.
- Perform clerical functions supporting patient care and office operations.
- Answer calls, take accurate messages, and relay them appropriately.
- Verify and enter accurate patient demographic and insurance information into the billing system.
- Enter diagnosis codes and charges accurately into billing system.
- Complete necessary forms and correspondence for patient care.
- Ensure patient safety following hospital and practice policies.
- Label patient specimens per policy.
- Follow infection control protocols, including standard precautions.
- Assist with survey readiness, inspections, and surveys.
- Perform quality control and monitoring, reporting out-of-range issues immediately.
- Practice National Patient Safety Goals consistently.
- Schedule surgeries, procedures, and testing for patients.
- Provide exit counseling, including education, testing scheduling, and information provision.
- Prepare charts and obtain vital signs and weights for clinic sessions.
- Perform control studies and document accordingly.
- Perform phlebotomy, read test results, and document findings.
- Prepare exam rooms and stock supplies daily.
- Offer pre- and post-examination education and counseling.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or higher education.
- Strong leadership, organizational, independent, and critical thinking skills; sound judgment; knowledge of legal aspects of nursing practice.
- Ability to communicate complex topics effectively to diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous outpatient office experience.
License, Certification & Clearances
- Medical Assistant Certification preferred.
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance
- Friends & Family CPR
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but serves as a coach and mentor within the department.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Scheduled based on operational needs (shift rotations, standby, on-call, etc.).
- Local travel between Independence Health locations may be required.
