As a Medical Assistant, you’re on the front line of care. You’ve developed a sixth sense for anticipating and answering the needs of your patients. You provide clinical and non-clinical assistance to physicians, providers, and licensed staff in managing patient flow and the environment of care. This includes answering phone messages, scheduling and authorizing procedures, surgeries, and deliveries, and stepping in as needed to cover other duties within the scope of non-licensed staff.

Your Everyday

  1. Measure and record vital signs, identify abnormal values, and report findings to appropriate nursing staff or medical providers.
  2. Assist with patient arrivals, schedule new and follow-up appointments, and facilitate smooth patient exits. Recognize emergencies and respond appropriately according to organizational policies.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of clinic equipment, including preparation, safety testing, cleaning, and disinfecting between patients and at the end of the day.
  4. Maintain linens, supplies, and equipment, and stock exam rooms and tables appropriately.
  5. Collect, prepare, and secure laboratory specimens for testing or transport as needed.
  6. Document appropriately in the patient’s medical record following departmental guidelines.
  7. Navigate electronic medical records to access lab and radiology results, outside records, update demographic data, and schedule follow-ups.
  8. Prepare safety reports when necessary or directed by the clinic manager/designee.
  9. Maintain patient confidentiality by securing computer screens when unattended.
  10. Demonstrate professionalism, including honesty, promptness, dependability, courtesy, and respect in interactions.
  11. Keep the clinic manager informed of activities, requirements, and issues.
  12. Manage patient and co-worker complaints calmly and report these to the clinic manager daily.
  13. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient information.
  14. Implement safety precautions per hospital policy to ensure patient safety during visits.
  15. Report safety hazards or violations and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  16. Assist in clinic preparation by gathering documentation, obtaining outside medical records, scanning correspondence, and handling calls.

The Must-Haves

Minimum: High School diploma, GED, or equivalent, or 2 years of relevant work experience.

Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
