$21.00/hr - $26.39/hr
Position: Medical Assistant #710155
Program: Nursing

Reports to: Nurse Manager
Compensation: $21.00-$26.39 per hour, plus $1.75 per hour Shift Differential Premium for hours worked between 6pm-6am
Schedule: Monday-Friday 10:00am-7:00pm
Status: 100% Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Union
Probation: 90 days

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: As the nation’s largest and most experienced provider of LGBT medical and mental health services, we help LGBTQ people lead healthier, happier lives, by keeping their minds and body well. All services are free or low cost. We’re also one of the few Federally Qualified Health Centers in the nation with providers who specialize in primary care for LGBTQ people and with a research team working to advance the care and treatment of people in our community.
JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant serves as an integral member of the health services team by stocking and preparing supplies and equipment, providing direct patient care, supporting clinic flow, coordinating and promoting continuity of care, facilitating appropriate delivery of health services, coordinating consultations, and serving as an intermediary between patients and their healthcare provider as part of a multidisciplinary care team to provide a range of patient care services.
Essential Functions
- Serve as part of a multidisciplinary care team to provide a range of patient care services, partnering with medical providers and other Health Services staff to maintain an effective and efficient program.
- Facilitate patient access to healthcare.
- Assure that the examination rooms are always clean and properly stocked with up-to-date equipment, non-expired supplies, disposable exam materials, and ensure that each exam room is set up in the same way.
- Prepare EMR prior to each visit and assure that all test results are available for review by the clinician.
- Prepare patient for clinical visit by taking vital signs and preparing necessary instruments and equipment as needed.
- Order and administer vaccines and place skin tests per clinic protocols, as well as perform laboratory functions as directed by licensed clinical staff.
- Within MA scope of practice, administer treatments and services as ordered by medical provider.
- Assist clients with completing paperwork and assist nursing staff with obtaining authorizations for imaging referrals, as well as retrieving reports in a timely manner.
- Maintain complete and accurate files documenting all care and services provided in patient health records.
- Monitor clinic refrigerators and maintain temperature logs, notifying supervisor of any out-of-range temperatures.
- Interact in a professional manner with health services staff and patients.
- Exercise appropriate judgment and decision-making skills.
- Assist with data auditing tasks.
- Participate in staff meetings, agency meetings, planning meetings, and other meetings as needed.
- Comply with requirements of OSHA, HIPAA, and other applicable regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications And Experience
- Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people.
- A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in direct patient care, preferably in an ambulatory care setting.
- Medical Assistant certification/diploma from approved training program.
- Current AHA CPR certification.
- Basic knowledge of infectious diseases.
- Basic knowledge of care coordination and navigation throughout the managed care process.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Electronic Health Records, and other software systems.
- Ability to be self-motivated and dedication to initiating and completing complex tasks.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks while maintaining strict confidentiality of medical information.
- Ability to work well independently with minimum supervision.
- Bilingual skills a plus (English/Spanish fluency preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
