Responsibilities
  1. Provides basic level of patient care and treatments, assists with obtaining vital signs, documents chief complaint, and all actions taken. Alerts physician of problems, concerns, or abnormalities.
  2. Assists with obtaining patient history, assists physicians and residents, and/or licensed nursing personnel.
  3. Performs simple patient procedures, sets up exam/procedure rooms including instruments for minor procedures, prepares, and may include administering medications (excluding IV) under direct supervision of a physician.
  4. Obtains lab specimens and fills out requisitions completely and accurately.
  5. Functions more independently, coordinates the workflow of Medical Assistants when necessary, and obtains authorization for referrals (typically in small clinics).
  6. Conducts front desk duties such as registration, check-in, and scheduling of patients.
  7. Maintains hospital standards of zero tolerance for mislabeled specimens and collects laboratory specimens according to hospital protocol.
  8. Assists the nurse/physician during examinations, treatments, and procedures as requested.
  9. Retrieves necessary equipment and supplies, assists in patient/equipment preparation, and performs follow-up actions as directed.
  10. Documents clinically relevant findings in the patient's record according to hospital and clinical protocols.
  11. Monitors and records patient vital signs, weight, positioning, ADLs, I&O activity, and blood glucose readings per RN instructions, hospital protocols, and standards of care.
  12. Records readings accurately and timely, assists with patient admission, discharge, and transfer.
  13. Initiates orders according to SJHMC time performance standards: STAT within 5 minutes, Discharge/Transfer within 10 minutes, Routine within 30 minutes.
  14. Completes full patient registration in IDX for new patients, ensuring all information is current and accurate.
  15. Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits, obtains authorizations and referrals as needed.

Qualifications
MINIMUM
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D., graduate of a Medical Assistant Program, or completion of U.S. Armed Forces medical services training.
  • Experience with computer programs used for check-in and scheduling required.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification.
PREFERRED
  • Previous Medical Assistant experience highly preferred.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Experience in a designated specialty.
