Description
Under close supervision of nursing leadership, supports provider practice by assisting with direct patient care duties, including patient call backs and refill requests. May perform diagnostic testing, maintain supply inventory levels, and clean and maintain medical equipment. Carries out all duties while maintaining compliance and confidentiality and promoting the mission and philosophy of the organization.
Essential Functions
- Rooms patients, takes and documents vital signs, and prepares patients for provider exam.
- Administers medication under physician’s direction and within the scope of practice as demonstrated by completion of training and testing.
- Performs diagnostic testing such as EKGs, audiograms, tympanograms, spirometry, and visual screenings as instructed and documents in EPIC EMR.
- Responsible for reviewing both Provider refill in basket and assisting with daily medication refill requests using the ARC refill protocol.
- Responsible for reviewing EPIC triage call-in basket for callbacks.
- Responsible for reviewing result notes in basket and calling/informing patients of normal lab results.
- Ensures rooms are properly stocked and supplies are current and within expiration dates.
- Cleans patient rooms as needed, including proper handling of dirty laundry.
- Ensures laundry cart is stocked with fresh linens daily.
- Follows directions given by nursing team leader or supervisor.
- Follows clinic protocols.
- Provides patients with educational materials as directed.
- Adheres to all company policies, including OSHA, HIPAA, compliance, and Code of Conduct.
- Maintains regular and dependable attendance.
- Works holiday shifts as required by company policy.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- May answer incoming calls to nursing triage, demonstrating strong listening skills to determine call acuity.
- Assists patients in non-clinical situations when possible, or forwards calls to appropriate clinical staff.
- Handles medication refills, referral questions, lab/immunization record requests, and other patient inquiries following protocols.
- Uses smart phrases for documentation and routing messages.
- Posts test results through patient’s MyChart portal.
- Assists providers with procedures, including setup, patient prep, and cleanup, documenting all in EPIC EMR.
- Maintains equipment and performs other duties within the scope of unlicensed personnel.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must meet one of the following: Medical Assistant experience, CNA/EMT/PCT or similar providing direct patient care, or graduate of a medical assistant program.
Preferred
- Six months or more experience as a Medical Assistant.
Certificates and Licenses
- Medical Assistant certification preferred.
- Current AHA-approved BLS/CPR card or within 60 days of hire required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to administer medications and injections within scope within 90 days.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to multitask and work in a team environment.
- Proficiency with Windows and computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and perform duties professionally.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
