Job summary

The Media Relations Intern will observe and assist the media relations staff with day-to-day functions within the department. This internship provides hands-on experience in professional sports communications and will include opportunities to gain experience in media relations, sports communications, game-day operations, writing, and statistics.

Qualifications

• Professional communication skills and the ability to interact with executives, visiting team personnel, and media.

Responsibilities

• Assist with creating and issuing media credentials for print, TV, and radio.
• Assist with setting up the media level for home games and post-game interviews.
• Help gather sound and post material for the team’s media sites.
• Work Penguins home games as scheduled.

Reports to: Senior Director, Communications / Communications Fellow

Location: PPG Paints Arena, 1001 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15219 & UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, 8000 Cranberry Springs Dr, Cranberry Twp, PA 16066

Status: Paid Internship, Part-Time, In-Person

Schedule: Flexible scheduling within 10–15 hours per week, including availability during day and evening hours, weekends, and Pittsburgh Penguins home games.

Compensation: $10/hour

Overview

The Media Relations Intern will observe and assist the media relations staff with day-to-day functions within the department. This internship provides hands-on experience in professional sports communications and will include opportunities to gain experience in media relations, sports communications, game-day operations, writing, and statistics.

The intern will work closely with the Pittsburgh Penguins media relations staff and will interact with executives of the Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Club, visiting team personnel, and local and national media outlets. Interns will gain experience and training in writing media releases and game notes, preparing game-day materials, and supporting media operations.

Key Responsibilities

Media Credentials & Game-Day Operations

• Help to make and issue all media credentials that go to various members of the print, television, and radio media.
• Assist with setting up the media level for home games.
• Help set up all post-game interviews and gather sound to be posted on the team’s media-only website.
• Be available to work Pittsburgh Penguins home games when scheduled.

Media Relations & Communications

• Gain experience and training in writing media releases and game notes.
• Learn the process involved in writing player section notes during home games.
• Assist with compiling media materials and information for various mediums.
• Act in a professional manner when interacting with executives, visiting team personnel, and local and national media outlets.

Statistics & Game Notes

• Assist with writing and compiling in-game and post-game notes during and after games.
• Run statistics to both coaching staffs, upper management, and the media.
• Learn how to keep player statistics for various mediums.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Applicants should have completed at least two years of college or demonstrate equivalent education, training, or relevant experience in a related field.
• Ability to work in person at PPG Paints Arena as needed.
• Availability to work 10–15 hours per week, including Pittsburgh Penguins home games when scheduled.
• Professional communication skills and the ability to interact appropriately with executives, visiting team personnel, and local and national media.

Preferred Skills

• Proficiency in Adobe InDesign.
• Experience with writing, editing, or communications.
• Interest in sports media relations, communications, journalism, or a related field.
• Familiarity with statistics or sports statistics.

Penguins Internship Program Information

(Please note: The Media Relations internship has a potential earlier start date on January 1st, 2027 based on gameday needs.)

Anticipated Internship Term: January 11th, 2027 - April 16th, 2027

Course Credit: Students remain eligible for earning course credits for their internship and will be responsible for ensuring that the internship meets the criteria of their program and/or university.
