Job summary

AMETEK NSI-MI Technologies in Torrance, CA seeks a Mechanical Technician II to perform advanced mechanical and electrical assembly of precision assemblies and positioning systems.

You will work in a build-to-order production environment, setup and install large bearings, verify tolerances with precision instruments, and travel up to 25% for field installations. A strong background in blueprint reading and troubleshooting is essential.

Qualifications

  • 5 years minimum of machine building/assembly experience.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Advanced mechanical troubleshooting and basic electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of system level mechanical testing.
  • Knowledge of z-mapping & correction, planar, cylindrical and spherical alignment.
  • Knowledge of assembly tools and mechanical assembly techniques.
  • Advanced blueprint and schematic reading.
  • Accurate record keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of laser alignment methods – spinning/tracker.
  • Base level system operation.
  • Capable of solo or leading a team on system field installations and baseline testing.
  • Forklift, aerial device/elevated platform and rigging certified.
  • Ability to manually lift/move up to 45 pounds. Travel ~25%.
  • Legal right to work in the U.S. and access export-controlled information.

Responsibilities

  • Fasten components or parts together using hand tools, rivet guns, torque wrenches, and welding equipment.
  • Position and align components for assembly, manually or with material handling tools.
  • Analyze blueprints, schematics and specifications for assembly, wiring and machine building.
  • Rework, repair, and replace damaged parts or assemblies.
  • Install piping, fixtures, wiring and electrical components to specifications.
  • Inspect and test parts for leakage, defects, or functionality with test equipment.
  • Set and verify clearance of parts.
  • Set-up and install large bearings and slewing rings.
  • Verify conformance using calipers, gauges and laser trackers.
  • Lay out, drill, ream, tap and cut parts for assembly.
  • Finish surfaces and remove rough spots to fit assemblies.
  • Clean parts using hand and power tools.
  • Perform preventative maintenance per instructions and update checklists.
  • Examine parts for defects and reassemble equipment after inspections.
  • Fabricate panels and structures; cut, clamp, glue, lift and paint.

Job Summary:

The primary role of this position is to perform advanced mechanical and electrical assembly of various precision assemblies, mechanisms and positioning systems. The Mechanical Technician II position involves the assembly and installation of a low volume, high technology, high variation product mix, produced in a project driven build-to-order production working environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Fasten components or parts together, using hand tools, rivet guns, torque wrenches, and welding equipment.
  • Positions and aligns components for assembly, manually or utilizing various material handling tools and equipment.
  • Analyze assembly blueprints, schematics and specification manuals, and assists with assembly, wiring and/or machine building operations.
  • Rework, repair, and replace damaged parts or assemblies.
  • Fasten and install piping, fixtures, or wiring and electrical components to specifications.
  • Inspect and test parts and accessories for leakage, defects, or functionality, using electronic, optical and mechanical test equipment.
  • Set and verify clearance of parts.
  • Set-up and installation of large bearings and slewing rings
  • Verify conformance of parts to stock list and blueprints, using measuring instruments, such as calipers, gauges, micrometers, indicators, spinning lasers and laser trackers.
  • Lay-out, drill, ream, tap and cut parts for assembly.
  • Remove rough spots and finish surfaces to fit
  • Clean parts or components using hand tools and power tools.
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance per instructions and update checklists.
  • Examine parts for defects such as breakage and excessive wear.
  • Reassemble equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  • Fabrication of panels and structures, requiring material cutting, clamping, gluing, lifting and painting.
  • Work with little or no direct supervision in field installation scenarios.
  • Creative approach to problem solving and ability to exercise good judgement.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 5 years minimum of machine building/assembly experience or a combination of applicable course work and job experience
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Advanced mechanical troubleshooting and basic electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of system level mechanical testing.
  • Knowledge of z-mapping & correction, planar, cylindrical and spherical alignment
  • Knowledge of assembly tools and mechanical assembly techniques.
  • Advanced blueprint and schematic reading.
  • Accurate record keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of laser alignment methods – spinning/tracker.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Set-up, operation and MDI of CNC machinery
  • Cut and weld metal to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, and assemble new equipment. MIG and TIG Welding capabilities.
  • Set-up and operation of metalworking equipment such as milling, drilling, turning and grinding machinery to shape or fabricate parts.
  • Manufacturing, Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical Engineering background desirable.
