Jefferson County is seeking an experienced Mechanical & Plumbing Inspector to join our team. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on trade experience, a strong understanding of mechanical and plumbing systems, and a thorough knowledge of permitting and inspection processes. Experience working with both residential and commercial construction is preferred. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting inspections to verify compliance with applicable codes, plans, and permit requirements while providing clear and professional guidance to contractors and property owners.

The Mechanical & Plumbing Inspector role is a great opportunity for someone who:

The Mechanical & Plumbing Inspector performs technical inspection work throughout the County to ensure construction and building systems comply with applicable codes, approved plans, and permit requirements. This position conducts inspections of a variety of structures and projects, including residential, commercial, and industrial construction, at various stages of development and upon completion. The Mechanical & Plumbing Inspector reviews blueprints, diagrams, plans, and other construction documents and evaluates work in the field for compliance with applicable requirements. When deficiencies are identified, the Inspector documents findings and issues correction notices, stop‑work orders, and other enforcement actions as appropriate. The position also explains inspection findings, correction requirements, and applicable building codes to contractors, property owners, officials, agencies, and the public. The Mechanical & Plumbing Inspector may also respond to complaints and inquiries regarding potential code violations and conduct follow‑up inspections as necessary to verify compliance.

SCHEDULE

This position typically follows a traditional five‑day workweek, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with work performed both in the field and in the office. Alternative schedules, including a four‑day workweek, may be available and negotiated with the Hiring Manager based on operational needs.

COMPENSATION

Anticipated Hiring Range: $33.44 - $50.16 USD Hourly

The posted pay range reflects the full earning range for this position. Starting pay will be based on the candidate’s education, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Conducting field inspections throughout the County, including mechanical, plumbing, and general building safety inspections as assigned.
  • Ensuring compliance with the applicable adopted building codes.
  • Reviewing approved plans, blueprints, diagrams, and other construction documents.
  • Explaining code requirements, product installation requirements, and technical standards to contractors, property owners, design professionals, and members of the public.
  • Identifying code violations and construction deficiencies and issuing correction notices, stop‑work orders, and other required enforcement documentation.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete inspection records, reports, forms, photographs, and other documentation associated with field inspections and enforcement activities.
  • Providing field training and guidance to customers and contractors regarding construction procedures, inspection requirements, and code interpretations.
  • This role is expected to testify in court when a situation requires.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Mobility: Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crawling into tight spaces (e.g., crawlspaces, attics, basements). Ability to safely climb extension ladders, scaffolding, and temporary stairs.
  • Strength & Stamina: Ability to lift and carry 50-100 pounds. Stamina to walk long distances across unpaved, uneven, or sloped construction sites.
  • Sensory: Peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus to read blueprints, and recognize safety hazards. Adequate hearing to communicate in noisy construction zones and sense oncoming site vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of work‑related experience as an inspector (or equivalent position in another jurisdiction) and in one or more construction trades.
  • Certifications/Licenses: P1 – Residential Plumbing Inspector & P2 – Commercial Plumbing Inspector (or) Journeyman/Master Plumber License.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience: Five (5) years of combined experience, including: two years as an inspector (or equivalent position in another jurisdiction), and three years of experience in one or more construction trades.
  • M1 & M2 Certifications.
  • Experience with the AMANDA database or something similar.
