Job description

Mechanical Maintenance Technician

Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Department: Operations

Position Summary

The position is responsible for installation, troubleshooting, repair, and both preventive and corrective maintenance of all mechanical equipment at the hydrogen liquefaction plant located in St. Gabriel, LA. This role requires a strong mechanical aptitude and a comprehensive understanding of industrial chemical process facilities. The technician must respond to urgent equipment needs to ensure continuous and reliable plant operation. The ideal candidate should possess excellent communication skills, be familiar with mechanical systems such as compressors, pumps, and valves, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards while maintaining high workmanship standards.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Perform installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on critical mechanical systems, including compressors, cryogenic turbo expanders, and process pumps.
  2. Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance tasks to ensure equipment reliability and prevent downtime.
  3. Respond quickly to equipment malfunctions, performing corrective maintenance and component replacements.
  4. Inspect and maintain manual and automation valves, performing repairs or rebuilds as needed.
  5. Execute work orders, document activities in the CMMS platform (Maximo, Emaint, SAP or equivalent), and maintain accurate records.
  6. Follow and maintain records for Process Safety Management procedures.
  7. Support and comply with Non-Routine Work Permits.
  8. Maintain organization of the Maintenance Repair Area and inventory.
  9. Assist with additional operation/maintenance duties and general plant housekeeping.
  10. Participate in on-call rotation for troubleshooting during off hours.
  11. Travel occasionally (0-20%) to vendor/supplier shops or other Plug facilities for outage or training activities.
  12. Represent Plug Power professionally in all interactions.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant industrial mechanical maintenance experience, preferably in process plants, Oil & Gas, or chemical industries.
  • An associate or vocational degree in mechanical maintenance, or in lieu, an additional two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with hydrogen systems or facilities is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, with experience in maintaining and troubleshooting compressors, pumps, rotating equipment, valves, and cryogenic systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and OEM manuals.
  • Familiarity with safety and compliance standards for mechanical systems.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented.
Pay Rate

$27.00 - $38.90 per hour
