Job summary

City of Montgomery seeks an inspector to enforce gas and mechanical codes across existing and new installations. You will work independently in the field, applying technical discretion to resolve installation challenges and ensure compliance with standards.

The role requires leadership experience and several years in HVAC inspection, with duties including field inspections, coordination with stakeholders, and some office tasks. A valid Alabama license may be needed.

  • Confers with supervisors, contractors, architects, engineers, owners and the public regarding questions related to inspection and enforcement of applicable codes and ordinances.

Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.


A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.


Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled inspection work in securing compliance with ordinances and regulations governing existing and new gas and mechanical installations. The work involves responsibility for performing field and office activities in the City's gas and mechanical inspection program and securing compliance with legally established specifications and requirements. The inspector works independently in the field and is responsible for making decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment and familiarity with a variety of installation and repair problems.


The work responsibilities are:


  • inspects the installation of the mechanical components of commercial kitchen appliances, heating and air conditioning equipment, gas and oil piping, gas-fired and oil-fired appliances and ventilating equipment

  • confers with supervisors, contractors, architects, engineers, owners and the public regarding questions relative to inspection and enforcement of applicable codes and ordinances

  • performs general office functions


The work is subject to general supervision and may be reviewed in cases involving permits and enforcement of applicable codes. General direction is received from the Chief Plumbing Inspector or Assistant Chief Plumbing and Gas Inspector.


Minimum Qualifications


  • High school diploma or G.E.D.

  • Five (5) years’ experience in residential and commercial installation or inspection of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems including one (1) year of experience in a leadership capacity.


NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.


Special Requirements


  • Must have or obtain a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to operate a City vehicle in the performance of mechanical and gas inspections.

  • Certification within one (1) year of employment as a Mechanical Inspector (Commercial) through a recognized certification program in compliance with the International Code Council.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Physical ability to stoop, bend, crawl or climb ladders or flights of stairs as needed to make inspections.
