The City of Montgomery, Alabama is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to enforce codes on gas and mechanical installations within commercial and residential settings. The role requires evaluating installations of HVAC, kitchen appliances, and ventilation systems, with decisions made independently in the field under supervision.
Ideal candidates will have five years of relevant inspection experience, a valid Alabama driver’s license, and ICC certification within one year of employment.
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled inspection work in securing compliance with ordinances and regulations governing existing and new gas and mechanical installations. The work involves responsibility for performing field and office activities in the City's gas and mechanical inspection program and securing compliance with legally established specifications and requirements. The inspector works independently in the field and is responsible for making decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment and familiarity with a variety of installation and repair problems. The work responsibilities are inspects the installation of the mechanical components of commercial kitchen appliances, heating and air conditioning equipment, gas and oil piping, gas-fired and oil-fired appliances and ventilating equipment; confers with supervisors, contractors, architects, engineers, owners and the public regarding questions relative to inspection and enforcement of applicable codes and ordinances; and performs general office functions. The work is subject to general supervision and may be reviewed in cases involving permits and enforcement of applicable codes. General direction is received from the Chief Plumbing Inspector or Assistant Chief Plumbing and Gas Inspector.
Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
High school diploma or G.E.D. Five (5) years' experience in residential and commercial installation or inspection of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems including one (1) year of experience in a leadership capacity.
Must have or obtain a valid Alabama driver's license as needed to operate a City vehicle in the performance of mechanical and gas inspections. Certification within one (1) year of employment as a Mechanical Inspector (Commercial) through a recognized certification program in compliance with the International Code Council.
Physical ability to stoop, bend, crawl or climb ladders or flights of stairs as needed to make inspections.
