Job summary

Applied Atomics is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, and build-out of the major thermal-fluid systems for our FOAK nuclear plant. You’ll work with senior engineers on main steam, feedwater, condensate, ACC, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, piping, and auxiliary systems.

This remote role offers hands-on hardware experience, system integration, and ownership of major plant systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 2-4 years of mechanical or fluid system design experience (1-2 years with MS).
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, material behavior, and structural mechanics.
  • Experience with CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, Creo, etc.).
  • Experience with fluid system PID.
  • Ability to perform engineering analysis using hand calcs and/or software.
  • Exposure to industrial fluid systems, piping, pumps/compressors, heat exchangers, and/or turbomachinery.
  • Familiarity with applicable mechanical/industrial codes and standards (ASME, API, NRC, NFPA).
  • Strong technical communication and documentation skills.
  • Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and contribute to a fast-moving, multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop balance-of-plant (BOP) systems and plant interfaces.
  • Create mechanical design concepts, layouts, and piping configurations.
  • Perform thermal, structural, and fluid analyses.
  • Develop, review, and validate system models and simulations.
  • Create and update CAD models and diagrams (NX, SolidWorks, Creo).
  • Support vendor outreach and manufacturing, assembly, and installation.
  • Prepare PDRs, CDRs, and design gate documents.
  • Collaborate with interfacing system owners and engineering teams.
  • Define and manage BOMs, component specs, and config control.
  • Develop project schedules, budgets, and resource plans.
  • Participate in hardware bring-up, field testing, and commissioning.
