Job summary

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to research, design, and develop mechanical systems for U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers.

This role blends engineering with hands-on field support, coordinating with shipyard trades and engineering teams to meet safety, quality, cost, and schedule requirements. Candidates should have a relevant engineering degree with experience; ABET accreditation is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in engineering; 5+ years of exempt experience.
• Master’s Degree with 3+ years of professional experience.
• Ph.D. with 0 years of experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, analyze, and develop mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal systems for submarine/carrier applications.
• Support ship certification and delivery by evaluating open work and ensuring compliance with Navy and SUBSAFE standards.
• Prepare and review technical documentation including design proposals, calculations, analyses, procedures, and deviation requests.
• Collaborate with NAVSEA, Electric Boat, vendors, and shipyard personnel to address design and construction challenges.
• Apply engineering principles to develop technically sound solutions for complex shipboard problems.
• Participate in on-site issue resolution in a shipyard environment; some travel may be required.
