Job summary

Leonardo DRS EOIS in Dallas, TX is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II - Cooled to contribute to cryogenically-cooled infrared sensor development. You will work on the full product life cycle from concept through test, collaborating in a tight-knit team to deliver innovative solutions.

The role requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering and at least 2 years of experience, with strong fundamentals in heat transfer, materials, and GD&T.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical engineering.
  • Experience with manufacturing methods, factory standards, and assembly documentation.
  • Strong grasp of heat and mass transfer and material properties.
  • Ability to read detailed engineering drawings and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; team oriented.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products and subsystems.
  • Use CAE or design software; report progress regularly.
  • Provide budget, cost, and schedule input for tasks.
  • Specify and evaluate supplier components and services.
  • Develop prototypes to retire development risks.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support manufacturing requirements.

Job Summary

The Electro-Optics and Infrared Systems group provides customers with the ideal combination of performance, innovation, and value for a variety of applications. Become a key member of an integrated product team developing leading-edge, cryogenically-cooled infrared sensors and related military products. Develop technical solutions to a wide range of complex problems related to the entire product life cycle of sensor assemblies, including: proposal, concept generation, design, manufacture, integration and test. Research and explore scientific developments in thermal, structural, and vacuum technology, as well as materials and electronics in a collaborative, supportive environment to create innovative results.

Job Responsibilities
  • Responsible for technical activity and completion of assigned task on time and budget.
  • Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems.
  • May use computer-aided engineering or other design / analysis software in the performance of assignments.
  • Report on progress and status regularly.
  • Utilize root causes analysis methods, develop solutions, and implement those solutions as part of a cross-functional team or as an individual.
  • Provide budget, cost, and schedule input for assignments.
  • Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems, and services.
  • Support the program design to cost and design for manufacture requirements.
  • Develop prototypes to retire key development risks.
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required.
  • Participates in preparation of less-complex proposals.
  • May provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel.
  • Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the mission, values, and culture of the organization.
  • Follow defined work process to support product development
  • Work in a close knit, highly collaborative team.

Working Conditions:

  • Sitting for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. and carry up to 10 lbs.
  • Must be able to simultaneously manage several objectives and reassign priorities
  • Must be able to tolerate changing priorities, and complete assignments despite interruptions
  • Travel up to 10% of time
Qualifications
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or higher (or related engineering discipline)
  • 2+ years of experience.
  • Experience with manufacturing methods and processes, factory standards, fabrication processes, and assembly documentation.
  • Excellent grasp of heat and mass transfer
  • Understanding of materials and material properties
  • Design of experiments and practical problem solving
  • Well-developed communication skills, both in verbal presentations and written documentation
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Required Competencies:
  • Microsoft Office Suite of tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to read detailed engineering drawings, specifications and familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5
Desired Skills
  • Experience documenting manufacturing processes
  • Experience with various manufacturing processes such as welding, soldering, mechanical assembly, brazing, leak detection, or cleaning.
  • Knowledge of LabView programing
  • Familiarity with cryogenics, vacuum technology, infrared imaging systems, opto-mechanical design, and electromagnetism
  • Experience with transitioning new designs into production.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems such as ISO 9001, AS9100
  • Experience with Power BI

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
