Join to apply for the Mechanical Engineer II role at AgZen

AgZen is tackling two of agriculture’s biggest challenges: waste and pollution.

Each year, billions are spent on pesticides and fertilizers, yet most never reach the crops - resulting in costly waste and significant environmental harm. We’re changing that. By using advanced AI, computer vision, and fluid dynamics, AgZen optimizes chemical application in real time, reducing input use, minimizing pollution, and protecting both yields and ecosystems.

Founded out of MIT and backed by $13.5M in funding, our multidisciplinary team of AI, engineering, and ag science experts is redefining sustainable farming with breakthrough technology. We’re not just improving agriculture, we’re reimagining what’s possible.

If you're fueled by innovation and resilience, join us in tackling global challenges with real-world impact and a no-limits mindset!

About the Role

At AgZen, you’ll be joining a multidisciplinary engineering team that includes hardware, electrical, and software engineers working together to transform traditional agricultural practices. Our mission centers on retrofitting existing sprayers with advanced technology that enables smarter pesticide use through data collection and real-time insights.

As part of the hardware team, you’ll help design, build, and maintain the user-facing applications that run on sprayers around the world, as well as designing new systems to enable further agricultural optimization. We are looking for a sharp, tenacious, and creative Mechanical Engineer II to join our team and lead the company’s engineering work. Responsibilities will include all product development stages from R&D to design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and installation. Strong communication, flexibility, teamwork, the desire to take on different responsibilities and own them will all be essential skills for a successful applicant.

This role is located in Somerville, MA (Boston area) with work required to be in-person.

️ Travel expectation ~30% (on average but highly seasonal).

What You’ll Do:

  • Collaborate with customers and internal teams to translate field needs into robust, manufacturable design objectives - especially for modular, ruggedized hardware that must perform in harsh agricultural environments.
  • Build and test mechanical prototypes to validate fit, function, and assembly processes, and to troubleshoot integration with folding or moving equipment.
  • Engage in projects through all stages (R&D, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, installation, and on field use) by defining requirements, specifying parts, and owning designs at the subsystem level.
  • Engineer solutions that enable our systems to integrate seamlessly with a diverse array of commercial sprayers and agricultural machinery, addressing the unique challenges of retrofitting in the field.
  • Design enclosures and containers for sensitive electronics, with a focus on modularity and ease of servicing - ensuring components can be quickly swapped or repaired in the field to minimize downtime.
  • Address complex issues such as waterproofing, condensation management and lens cleaning, iterating designs based on real-world field failures and continuous customer feedback.
  • Develop and improve manufacturing processes, create detailed field installation plans, and work closely with manufacturing partners to scale production efficiently.
  • Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, and software teams to deliver on project timelines and defined deliverables (OKRs, scheduling, time tracking).

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3–5 years of industrial or mechanical design experience (product design experience a plus).
  • Strong background in dynamic mechanical design (actuation, robotics, folding, vibration resistance, etc.).
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks/CAD in an industry setting (experience with GD&T, FEA, DFM, and PDMs).
  • Enjoys hands-on work and building things with n fabrication experience (lathe, mill, CNC, drilling, 3D printing).
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as extrusions, cabling, machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, spooling, injection molding, and composites.
  • Field-work experience, including equipment installation and assembly documentation (spare parts lists, CMMS, preventative maintenance).
  • Exposure to adjacent fields such as structural engineering, industrial sensors, controls, or data acquisition (DAQ).
  • Experience with agricultural equipment, sprayers, or nozzles (preferred).
  • Passionate, curious, and innovative, with a strong work ethic and personal integrity.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and productive—thrives in fast-paced, team-oriented, and transparent environments.
