Job description

Thermal Works LLC has an exciting opportunity for the Mechanical Engineer to join our team, working directly with the Research & Development Team to ensure the smooth execution of strategic initiatives. We are looking for someone who is organized, proactive, and capable of working independently. The Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in designing, analyzing, and optimizing HVAC systems that support the performance and efficiency of our data center projects. Your expertise in HVAC system design, energy efficiency, and cooling technologies will be critical in ensuring the highest levels of reliability and operational efficiency for data center clients. You will work closely with the R&D team to deliver sustainable, energy-efficient, and scalable HVAC solutions tailored to the thermal management needs of data centers.

Thermal Works values efficiency and strives to maintain smooth operations. Our primary focus is on providing an integrated cooling system for data centers and commercial buildings that dramatically reduces the energy demand, water consumption and cost of cooling. It transforms the economics and eco-metrics of commercial cooling with zero water solutions that outperform air- and water-cooled systems in any climate.

Thermal Works solutions are sustainable and cutting-edge. For that reason, we are highly selective about the people we bring on board because our work depends on it. Change and progress happen quickly, and we must be able to trust one another to be honest, communicative, reliable, and self-motivated. We seek ultra-creatives and superstar performers with a sense of humility and a hunger to make a positive impact in the world. We offer flexibility and endless growth opportunities to those who can harness their skills and talents and identify how and where to use them to add value. Thermal Works is looking for someone to join our team to help us move the needle towards sustainable change. Are you ready to join the journey?

Key Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:

HVAC System Design:
  • Design, model, and specify HVAC systems, including cooling, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, that meet the high-performance needs of data centers.
  • Focus on critical systems, such as precision cooling, computer room air conditioning (CRAC), in-row cooling, chilled water systems, and air-side economization.
  • Design systems that account for high-density server loads, redundant cooling systems, and failover configurations to maintain optimal temperatures in mission-critical environments.
Thermal Load Management:
  • Perform detailed thermal load calculations to ensure cooling systems are adequately designed for the heat dissipation requirements of high-density data centers.
  • Implement airflow management strategies, including hot and cold aisle containment, to optimize cooling efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
Energy Efficiency & Sustainability:
  • Incorporate energy-efficient design practices such as free cooling, evaporative cooling, and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems to maximize energy savings.
  • Design systems with a focus on sustainability, ensuring that data center HVAC systems align with energy use reduction goals, local regulations, and sustainability certifications (e.g., LEED, ASHRAE).
System Integration & Coordination:
  • Work closely with electrical engineers, architects, and other disciplines to ensure HVAC systems integrate smoothly with the overall design of the data center.
  • Coordinate the mechanical system design with structural requirements and other building systems to ensure compatibility and efficiency.
Skills & Requirements
Education / Experience

Required:

  • 3-5 years of experience in HVAC system design, with a focus on data centers or similar mission-critical facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and optimizing HVAC systems for high-density, high-performance environments.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or HVAC Engineering.
  • LEED accreditation or ASHRAE certification.
  • Experience with data center cooling technologies (e.g., liquid cooling, direct expansion systems, modular cooling).
Specific Skills / Abilities
HVAC Design Expertise:
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, including CRAC units, air handling units, and chillers.
  • Proficient in heat load analysis, airflow modeling, and thermal simulation for data center environments.
Software Proficiency:
  • Proficiency in HVAC design and simulation software (e.g., Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, EnergyPlus, or similar).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar tools for system layout and coordination.
Energy Efficiency & Sustainability:
  • Expertise in designing energy-efficient HVAC systems, including free cooling, economization, and renewable energy integration.
  • Familiarity with industry standards for sustainable data center design, including ASHRAE 90.1, LEED, and energy modeling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate technical details to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architects, electrical engineers, and contractors, to ensure HVAC designs meet project goals.
Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking:
  • Ability to troubleshoot HVAC system performance issues and develop innovative solutions to optimize cooling and energy use.
