Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of professional mechanical engineering code-compliant facilities design experience.
  • Knowledge of DoD/Navy standards and related codes.
  • Familiarity with ASME, NFPA, ASHRAE, and related standards.
  • Experience with building systems design and DoD project requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical engineering for plumbing, HVAC, and controls systems.
  • Support energy-saving and renewable systems in large facilities.
  • Develop piping and instrumentation diagrams and related designs.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure code-compliant designs.
  • Incorporate ATFP and security requirements into mechanical design.

Job description

Mount Indie is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide professional mechanical engineering services in support of the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities for NAVFAC Atlantic (LANT) in Norfolk, VA. This role supports mechanical design for a wide range of government facilities and requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, code-compliant designs that meet NAVFAC and DoD standards.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Provide mechanical engineering services for plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; digital data controls/instrumentation and control systems; chilled water, steam, hot water, compressed gasses, natural gas, and fuel distribution and storage.
  • Support energy saving and conversion systems, renewable/energy-efficient systems and studies, and power distribution and generation systems, including large utility plants and distribution systems.
  • Support air pollution control, water and wastewater control systems, and process and chemical process piping systems, including piping and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Apply security controls and Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection (ATFP) requirements to mechanical design of major size and complexity.
  • Support projects at government facilities including multi-story office buildings, steam plants, hospitals, housing, manufacturing, training facilities, waterfront structures, laboratories, command and control centers, hangars, medical facilities, and large and complex utility systems.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Professional knowledge and skill applying the theories, concepts, principles, computer system applications, and methodology of mechanical engineering to develop designs and plans for mechanical utility systems (e.g., heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration) as part of complex construction projects.
  • Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, criteria and policy, industry codes and standards, and standard practices related to mechanical engineering design, including ASME standards and BPVC, ASHRAE standards (189.1, 90.1, 62.1, and related handbooks), NFPA codes (54, 58, 90A, 96), SMACNA standards, IMC, IPC, and the International Building Code.
  • Knowledge of local, state, federal, and foreign country laws, codes, and other statutory requirements affecting mechanical engineering design throughout the NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic AOR.
  • Knowledge of related architectural and engineering fields and their associated impacts on mechanical engineering design.
  • Knowledge and experience with Autodesk software, Microsoft Office products, mechanical engineering design and analysis software, and other applicable DoD computer systems and software.
  • Ability to produce written results of analysis, consolidate findings of others, evaluate recommendations and facts, and make oral presentations of proposed designs and study results.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, planning, and project management techniques, including the ability to coordinate the work of others and lead teams.
  • Knowledge of and full compliance with Safety Policy and Guidance and use of personal protective equipment.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional mechanical engineering code-compliant facilities design experience for new construction, including renovation design experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and crouch, and remain in a stationary position at least 60% of the time.
  • Ability to operate office equipment, including computer, copy machine, and phone.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Capable of lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to see details of objects that are more than a few feet away.
  • Ability to understand the speech of another person, speak clearly so listeners can understand, and talk or hear both in person and by telephone.
  • Must be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions; occasionally required to navigate rough terrain, work in confined spaces, and operate at heights.
  • Required to wear PPE as necessary; may encounter hazards or contaminants during work tasks.
PAY
  • $52.00 - $67.00 (Hourly)
