Job summary

BB&E is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support NAVFAC Atlantic (LANT) in Norfolk, VA, focusing on mechanical design for government facilities including HVAC, energy systems, and utility distribution.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience, DoD/Navy standards knowledge, and the ability to coordinate tasks, manage teams, and articulate design results clearly.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of professional mechanical engineering design experience for new construction and renovations.
  • ABET-accredited Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • Knowledge of DoD/Navy standards and related codes (ASME, BPVC, ASHRAE, IPC/IMC).
  • Ability to produce written analyses and present results; strong project coordination and leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical engineering design for HVAC, piping, energy systems, and utilities for government facilities.
  • Lead design tasks, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and ensure compliance with relevant standards.
  • Prepare and present analyses and reports to stakeholders and project teams.

BB&E is an employee-owned, full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors.

Position Summary

BB&E is currently looking for a Mechanical EngineertosupportourNAVFAC Atlantic (LANT) in Norfolk, VA.

JobDuties &Responsibilities

Typical projects include: mechanical engineering services for plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; digital data controls/instrumentation and control systems, chilled water, steam, hot water, compressed gasses, natural gas, fuel distribution and storage, energy saving and conversion systems, renewable energy/energy efficient systems/studies, and power distribution and generation systems, large utility plants and distribution systems, air pollution control, water and waste water control systems, process and chemical process piping systems, piping and instrumentation diagrams, security controls and Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection (ATFP) for mechanical design of major size and complexity for use in government facilities, including, multi-story office buildings, steam plants, hospitals, housing, manufacturing, training, waterfront structures, laboratories, command and control centers, hangars, medical facilities, and large and complex utility systems.

KeyQualifications
  • Registration asa ProfessionalEngineer (PE) in the discipline of Mechanical Engineering ispreferred
  • Professional knowledge and skill in applying the theories, concepts, principles, computer systems applications, andmethodologyof mechanical engineering relevant to a wide range of construction projects and mechanical utility systems to develop engineering designs and plans for mechanical utility systems (e.g., heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration) as a part of complex construction projects
  • Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, criteria and policy, industry codes and standards, and standard practices as related to mechanical engineering design, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards such as 189.1, 90.1, 62.1, various ASHRAE handbooks, National Fire Protection Association Codes such as 54,58, 90A, 96, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association, Inc. (SMACNA) Standards, International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), and the International Building Code
  • Knowledge of local, state, federal, and foreign country laws, codes, and other statutory requirements affecting mechanical engineering design throughout the NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic AOR
  • Knowledge of related architectural and engineering fields and their associated impacts as related to mechanical engineering design
  • Knowledge and experience with Autodesk software, Microsoft Office products, mechanical engineering design and analysis software and other applicable DoD computer systems and software used by the Command
  • Ability to produce results of analysis in writing andconsolidatefindings of others and evaluate recommendations and facts; ability to make oral presentations of proposed designs and results of studies
  • Knowledge of budgeting, planning and project management techniques, including the ability to coordinate the work of others and lead teams
  • Knowledge of and full compliance with Safety Policy and Guidance and use of personal protective equipment
Experience& Education
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional mechanical engineering code compliant facilities design experience for new construction, including renovation design experience, isrequired
  • Bachelor's degree in a MechanicalEngineering programfrom anAccreditation Board for Engineers and Technology (ABET)institutionisrequired
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to: stand/walk/kneel/crouch and to remain in a stationary position at least 60% of the time; operate office equipment, including computer, copy machine, phone, etc.; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms; lift up to 25 lbs.; speak clearly so listeners can understand; understand the speech of another person; talk or hear both in person and by telephone; see details of objects that are more than a few feet away
  • Work Environment: Must be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions; occasionally required to navigate rough terrain, work in confined spaces, and operate at heights
  • PPE & Safety: Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary; may encounter hazards or contaminants during work tasks
