Job summary

Laredo Technical Services, Inc. in Naples, FL, seeks a Mechanical Engineer to support NAVFAC EURAFCENT with capital improvement projects for federal facilities. Primary duties include planning, design, and project management with occasional travel to NSA Bahrain.

Required are a bachelor’s in ABET-accredited mechanical engineering, 5+ years’ design experience, and a PE (desired). Knowledge of DoD/Navy specs and ASHRAE standards is essential for successful execution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in ABET-accredited mechanical engineering or engineering technology.
  • 5+ years of professional mechanical design experience for facilities, incl. at least 1 year on Federal MILCON projects.
  • PE license desired; knowledge of DoD/Naval specs and ASHRAE/IPC/IMC standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed designs, plans, specs, and cost estimates for large-scale mechanical systems.
  • Provide independent mechanical engineering support for planning, design, and maintenance of Navy facilities.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and other disciplines to ensure system integration per MILCON requirements.

Primary duties are to provide planning, estimating, scheduling, engineering, project management and administrative services with a primary work location at NSA Naples (Capodichino) but with temporary travel trips to NSA Bahrain. NSA Bahrain is comprised of four (4) installations known as NSA 1, NSA 2, NSA 3 and Isa Air Base.RESPONSIBILITIES:Be a U.S CitizenHave a valid driver’s licenseEDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:Bachelor Degree in an ABET accredited Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology program and minimum of 5 years of Mechanical systems design including at least 1 year working on Capital Improvement projects for a Federal Agency.Registration as Professional Engineer (PE) in the discipline of Mechanical Engineering is desired.Minimum of 5 years of professional mechanical engineering code compliant facilities design experience for new construction, including renovation design experience, is required.Completion of a course of studies accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineers and Technology (ABET) for a mechanical engineering program from a college or university earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, supplemented by a considerable amount of hands-on facilities design experience, is required.Prepare detailed designs, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for industrial processes, air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, compressed air, energy saving and conversion systems, pneumatic transport systems, control systems, utility systems, fuel oil systems, natural gas systems, pier mechanical systems, and other systems of major size and complexity of up to MILCON scope for use by Naval Shore Facilities, including multistory offices and quarters, steam plants, industrial waste treatment plants, ship piers, naval nuclear repair facilities, aircraft overhaul facilities and a very wide diversion of other structures and facilities.Provide independent, timely and professional specialized mechanical engineering support, services and consultation for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of facilities for the Navy, Marine Corps, and other Supported Commands, including minor works projects, specific projects, special projects, military construction (MILCON), demolition, maintenance, space utilization and facilities development. Participates in conferences with project stakeholders and collaborates with other engineering and architectural disciplines to ensure system coordination and integration with specific project requirements.Typical projects include: mechanical engineering services for plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; chilled water, steam, hot water, compressed gasses, natural gas, fuel distribution and storage, energy saving and conversion systems, renewable energy/energy efficient systems/studies, and power distribution and generation systems, large utility plants and distribution systems, air pollution control, water and waste water control systems, process and chemical process piping systems, piping and instrumentation diagrams, instrumentation and control systems, security controls and Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection (ATFP) for mechanical design of major size and complexity for use in government facilities, including, multistory office buildings, steam plants, hospitals, housing, manufacturing, training, waterfront structures, laboratories, command and control centers, hangars, medical facilities, and large and complex utility systems.Professional knowledge and skill in applying the theories, concepts, principles, computer systems applications, and methodology of mechanical engineering relevant to a wide range of construction projects and mechanical utility systems to develop engineering designs and plans for mechanical utility systems (e.g., heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration) as a part of complex construction projects.Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, criteria and policy, industry codes and standards, and standard practices as related to mechanical engineering design, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards such as 189.1, 90.1, 62.1, various ASHRAE handbooks, National Fire Protection Association Codes such as 54,58, 90A, 96, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association, Inc. (SMACNA) Standards, International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), and the International Building Code.Knowledge of local, state, federal, and foreign country laws, codes, and other statutory requirements affecting mechanical engineering design throughout the NAVFAC EURAFCENT AOR. Knowledge of related architectural and engineering fields and their associated impacts as related to mechanical engineering design.Knowledge and experience with Autodesk software, Microsoft Office products, mechanical engineering design and analysis software and other applicable DoD computer systems and software used by the Command.Ability to produce results of analysis in writing and consolidate findings of others and evaluate recommendations and facts.
