Job Description:

Saab Inc.’s Land Systems division is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with experience in weapon systems engineering design, development, and production support. The engineer will be a member of the Mechanical Engineering team responsible for the development of shoulder-fired munitions and precision fire systems. In addition, the engineer will collaborate with other engineering disciplines, program management, chief engineer, and other functions to accomplish assigned tasks. Currently the position is remote home office; relocation will be required to Detroit, MI area within 2025.

Responsibilities include:

  • Application of mechanical engineering principles for the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies in accordance with system requirements.
  • Develop CAD models of electronic, mechanical, and electro-mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Documentation of design solutions including reports, engineering drawings and Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Present and discuss technical concepts, tradeoffs, analyses, designs, and performance estimates.
  • Interface with Systems Engineering and other disciplines to develop/define/implement customer requirements.
  • Follow through on full product lifecycle: development, prototyping, integration, verification, deployment, and support.
  • Incorporate Mechanical Engineering best practices Design for Cost, Maintainability and Manufacturability.
  • Identify, manage, and solve problems associated with mechanical engineering work products.
  • Apply experience and knowledge to resolve design, supplier quality, manufacturing, and field issues.
  • Follow company standard operating procedures and Quality System requirements.
  • Provide effective communication across functional teams.
  • Work as key member of a cross-functional team to develop mechanical and electro-mechanical solutions.
  • Domestic and Foreign Travel may be required up to 20%.


Compensation Range: $78,900-$98,600

The compensation range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Saab, Inc. considers factors including (but not limited to) the role and associated responsibilities, location, and market and business considerations, as well as the candidate's work experience, key skills, and education/training.

Skills and Experience:

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field and 2+ years of relevant experience. A Master’s Degree in related field may be substituted for additional years of experience.
  • Experience in basic mechanical design, documentation, and production support.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical challenges while working in a cross-functional team.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software.
  • Experience with configuration management systems.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively (written and verbal)
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with proven hands-on experience.
  • Must hold or be able to hold a U.S. DoD SECRET security clearance.


Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Experience in design, development, testing, and production support of weapon systems.
  • Experience with DoD programs.
  • Familiarity with Military Standards, ruggedized equipment design, and environmental test requirements.
  • Experience with ANSI/ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with SolidWorks
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
  • Experience creating engineering drawings
