Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer - Education, Mission Critical, Life Sciences & Healthcare

Employment Type: Full-Time

Work Arrangement: Hybrid (3 days on-site, 2 days remote)

The Opportunity

A well-established MEP engineering firm serving the Greater Boston area is looking to add a Senior Mechanical Engineer to its growing team. This role offers ownership of high-complexity mechanical design work spanning mission critical (data center), life sciences, and healthcare sectors, alongside the chance to mentor junior staff and take a lead role in client-facing project delivery.

The Role

You'll lead mechanical design on mission critical and healthcare projects from initial concept through construction administration - covering HVAC system design, load calculations, equipment selection, and energy modeling. Close coordination with electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and structural disciplines will be central to delivering integrated MEP solutions, and you'll take the lead on client relationships, presenting design recommendations directly to owners, architects, and contractors. The role also includes reviewing and stamping construction documents, specifications, and calculations, as well as mentoring junior and mid-level engineers on technical standards and best practice. Staying current with codes governing critical facilities and healthcare spaces - including NFPA 99, NFPA 70, ASHRAE 170, and Massachusetts state amendments - is expected.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • At least 7 years of mechanical engineering experience within an MEP or building systems consulting setting
  • Hands-on project experience in mission critical (data center) and/or healthcare facility design
  • Massachusetts PE license, or eligibility to obtain one via reciprocity
  • Solid grasp of HVAC system design, energy modeling, and the redundancy/resiliency standards typical of critical facilities
  • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and load calculation software such as Trane Trace or Carrier HAP
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes: ASHRAE, NFPA 99/70, IMC, and Massachusetts state building code
  • Strong communication skills and comfort presenting to clients and cross-disciplinary teams
  • Located in, or willing to work on-site in, the Boston area
Preferred Qualifications
  • LEED accreditation
  • Background in commissioning or building automation systems (BAS)
  • Experience leading junior engineers or serving as a project lead
What's on Offer
  • Competitive base salary based on experience
  • A defined path toward Principal/Associate level for strong performers
  • Involvement in high-visibility mission critical and healthcare projects across the Boston market
  • A collaborative, senior team environment with genuine technical mentorship
