Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer will perform engineering calculations and prepare detailed mechanical engineering drawings for HVAC, plumbing and fire protection design for buildings primarily within the higher education, science and technology, utility, data center, cannabis, manufacture, industrial and healthcare market sectors. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will oversee mechanical designers, drafters and field engineers, mentor/teach personnel in the department team, and work on architectural & engineering projects across the Eastern region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Field survey of existing mechanical, fire protection and plumbing systems
  • Facility assessment survey of existing mechanical, fire protection and plumbing systems
  • Design of HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial, industrial, government, school and healthcare facilities
  • Preparation of construction documents, including drawings, specifications, calculations and details
  • Engage in business development and attract clients to LXC Engineering Group
  • Approve mechanical submittals and aid in RFI responses during construction administration
  • Lead HVAC, plumbing and fire protection design and team on a variety of project types
  • Directly interface with the client and add value
  • Participate in the entire project cycle, from design phase through final construction close-out
  • Bring new clients, businesses and partners into the company
  • Lead complex projects and oversee all technical HVAC, plumbing and fire protection design and commissioning
  • Write and respond to RFIs, RFQs and RFPs
  • Manage multiple HVAC design projects through concept, SD, DD and CA phases
  • Serve as the main point of contact for clients and represent the team at project meetings
  • Organize in-house resources, train and mentor junior staff, assist with marketing and proposal efforts
  • Manage project finances: prepare budgets, monitor compliance with time/schedule deadlines, obtain additional work authorizations for scope changes and ensure project profitability
  • Develop project objectives, goals and documentation policies; coordinate design between engineering disciplines and architecture team
  • Generate work, business development and contribute to company growth
  • Lead commissioning, energy audit and renewable team projects; perform energy analysis and apply high‑performance design techniques
  • Prepare detailed engineering reports and narratives
  • Perform on‑site condition surveys
  • Process contractor submittals and assist in construction administration
  • Maintain LEED and WELL accreditation; previous experience in green rating systems
  • Estimate budgets and time scopes for each project; analyze problems and develop design solutions
  • Network and collaborate with other engineers and professionals; work within budget to deliver safe and efficient products on time
  • Allocate resources and time effectively; attend meetings, provide input and updates
  • Analyze data to write up reports
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited college or university
  • 12 to 20 years of professional experience as a principal mechanical, plumbing and fire protection engineer in design, commissioning, energy auditing and renewable energy
  • 7–10 years of field experience in heavy commercial, industrial and various governmental agency sectors
  • 10 to 25 years of experience in commercial, industrial, governmental agency, healthcare, education and commercial sectors
  • Experience with HVAC, fire protection and plumbing building systems mechanical design on simple to complex projects
  • Experience with Navisworks, Revit and Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit for BIM
  • 10 years of experience with HAP, Trane or other plumbing/fire protection design software
  • Intimate knowledge of New England State building codes
  • Ability to lead and work independently
  • Strong business development skills (15–25% focus for LXC Engineering Group)
  • Strong teamwork, ethics and ability to obtain a background check or meet security clearances
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Marketing and sales skills specific to MEP/FA/FP consulting
  • Strong technical field skills and understanding of root cause of problems in M/P/FP design, commissioning and testing
  • Teaching patience and ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure
  • Multi‑tasking capability
  • Provide technical direction and on‑the‑job training to less experienced designers
  • Experience with energy modeling and reporting software (IES VE, E‑Quest, Ladybug Tools)
  • LEED Accredited Professional and experience with green rating systems
  • WELL Accredited Professional
  • Experience and interest in sustainable and high‑performance building design (energy, water, carbon, occupant health, wellness, resiliency)
  • Motivated individual with strong work ethic and solid organizational skills
