Job summary

CONVERGIX Automation Solutions in Michigan is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to turn industrial machinery concepts into practical, manufacturable designs. You will develop detailed, manufacturable designs for automated equipment and support projects from concept to drawings, under the guidance of the Mechanical Engineering Manager.

You will perform sizing and strength calculations, ensure designs meet performance and budget targets, and collaborate with controls, electrical and build teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or journeyman tool maker, with relevant mechanical design experience.
• 2–3+ years designing mechanical systems for automation or manufacturing equipment.
• Proficient in SolidWorks and GD&T principles.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed mechanical designs for automated manufacturing equipment using SolidWorks.
• Create 3D models, assemblies and drawings with GD&T where appropriate.
• Perform sizing, strength and design calculations to meet performance and durability targets.
• Design to customer specs and budget, balancing function with cost and schedule.
• Support Lead Mechanical Engineer on project execution and flag risks early.
• Collaborate with controls, electrical and build teams; communicate issues clearly.

The Role

Join a fast-paced, leading-edge automation equipment design and manufacturing company. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will bring industrial machinery concepts to life through detailed mechanical design for industrial automation and manufacturing equipment. Working from the machine concept and architecture set by the Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will develop practical, manufacturable designs that meet customer specifications and performance, durability, schedule, and cost targets. This position reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed mechanical designs for automated manufacturing equipment from approved concepts and customer specifications, using SolidWorks.
• Create 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing-ready drawings, applying GD&T where appropriate.
• Perform sizing, strength, and design calculations to confirm designs meet performance and durability requirements.
• Design to customer specifications and the sold budget, balancing technical function with cost, schedule, and project profitability.
• Support the Lead Mechanical Engineer on project execution, and raise risks to schedule, budget, or scope early.
• Collaborate with other disciplines on the project team, such as controls, electrical, and build teams.
• Clearly communicate technical problems and proposed solutions to teammates and, as needed, customers and vendors.

Essential

Qualifications and Experience

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Journeyman Tool Maker.
• Approximately 2–3+ years of experience in mechanical system design.
• Strong SolidWorks experience, including detailed part, assembly, and drawing work.
• Strong math aptitude and ability to perform sizing and strength calculations.
• Understanding of mechanical systems and a hands-on approach.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical problems and solutions to engineers, customers, and non-technical stakeholders.
• Understanding of the business impact of engineering decisions, with awareness of schedules, budgets, and project profitability, not just technical functionality.
• Organizational/prioritization and creative problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
• Proficient in MS Office.
• Reliable transportation and the ability to travel; travel to customer/vendor facilities will be very limited.

Preferred

• Experience in automation, assembly automation, or similar machine design environments.
• Prior design experience with automation, systems integration, or custom equipment companies.
• Experience with GD&T (a significant plus).

Physical Demands

• While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to feel objects, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, talk and hear.
• Occasionally lifts or move up to 25 pounds.
