Job summary

RTX Collins Aerospace is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineering Intern in the Winston-Salem, NC area to design components and assemblies with manufacturability and reliability in focus. You will release NX drawings, evaluate materials, and collaborate across teams to validate designs.

The role develops CAD proficiency, material evaluation, and cross-functional teamwork, while aligning with FAA-related aerospace testing and constraints.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in STEM and enrolled through internship/co-op.
  • Experience with CAD software through coursework, projects, or on‑the‑job work.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies with manufacturability, reliability, and maintainability in focus.
  • Prepare, modify, and release NX CAD drawings ensuring fit, form, function.
  • Evaluate materials and parts for use in new designs.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and participate in design reviews.
  • Perform design studies to validate proposals and support development.
  • Conduct engineering calculations to size components and validate designs.
  • Apply DFMA tools to optimize design content.

What You Will Do

As a Mechanical Design Engineering Intern at Collins Aerospace, you will:

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies with a focus on manufacturability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Prepare, modify, and release CAD (NX) drawings to ensure the fit, form, and function of mechanical designs.
  • Evaluate materials and parts for use in new designs.
  • Operate within a team environment, working cross-functionally to provide input on design solutions and actively participating in design reviews.
  • Perform design studies to validate project proposals and support development activities.
  • Conduct engineering calculations to determine the size and strength of components, solving design problems and validating analytical designs.
  • Utilize engineering tools such as Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) to validate and optimize design content.

  • Aerospace Applications: Develop an understanding of the unique challenges of aerospace engineering and how FAA requirements drive a variety of testing to replicate “real world scenarios” to ensure passenger safety.
Qualifications

Qualifications You Must Have

Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major and actively enrolled through the completion of the internship/co‑op session. Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as Creo, SolidWorks, NX, Catia, AutoCAD, Autodesk or equivalent. Experience may be obtained through on‑the‑job experience, research, coursework, or projects.

Qualifications We Prefer

A degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and/or Outlook). Experience managing projects and working on cross‑functional teams. A minimum of 60 hours of credit by the start of the internship / co‑op session. Prior RTX internship, co‑op, or work experience.

What We Offer

The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD - 82,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑term disability, long‑term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective‑bargaining agreement.

  • Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short‑term and/or long‑term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective‑bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
