Job summary

American Chillers LLC in Columbia, SC is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to own and accelerate the mechanical design of our chillers. You’ll design frames, enclosures, sheet metal, piping, and component packaging, build 3D models, and release build-ready designs for production.

This design-first role centers on 3D CAD, design calculations, and collaboration with Sales Engineering on non-standard applications, ensuring designs feed into sheet-metal and pipe fabrication.

Qualifications

• 3–7 years of mechanical design experience on equipment, machinery, or engineered products.
• Solid engineering fundamentals: thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and basic structural analysis.
• Drawing discipline: clean drawings, tolerancing, BOMs, revision control.
• On-site in the Columbia, SC area; not remote.

Responsibilities

• Design chillers in 3D: frames, bases, enclosures, sheet-metal panels, and assemblies for standard and custom units.
• Route piping: refrigerant and process-water piping with valves, fittings, and service access.
• Release build-ready designs: production Drawings, assembly drawings, flat patterns, and BOMs.
• Develop new products from concept to prototype to production for markets like BESS, medical imaging, data centers.
• Build configurable master models to enable quick variant generation.
• Perform engineering math: heat transfer, pressure drop, structural checks, and weight/rigging considerations.
• Design for manufacturing and cost: reduce part count, rework, and lead time; integrate with fabrication equipment.
• Own revision control: ECOs and ensuring current approved designs.
