Job description

American Chillers designs and manufactures industrial process chillers and cooling systems for a growing range of demanding applications — pool & spa, industrial processes, breweries, medical systems (MRI/LINAC), battery energy storage (BESS), data centers, and more. We build custom, engineered-to-order equipment, and we take care of our customers long after the unit ships.

The Role

We're hiring a Chiller Support Technician — a sharp, driven technical person who becomes the backbone behind our product once it leaves the floor. You'll help customers and field technicians solve problems, own the technical documentation that ships with every chiller, and help keep our manufacturing process and workstations running clean.

This is a role with a ceiling, not a cap. You'll work alongside and learn from our most experienced technical people, get your hands on real equipment across interesting markets, and grow into a key technical leader as we scale. We're looking for someone hungry — early in their career but clearly a standout — who wants to own something and build it into a career.

What You’ll Do
  • Support customers and field techs — Be the technical voice on the phone for start-up questions, alarms, and troubleshooting. Work the common issues, learn the hard ones fast, and elevate when it's truly an engineering call.
  • Own the technical documentation — Write and maintain the paperwork that ships with every unit: O&M manuals (especially service and troubleshooting sections), and keep electrical schematics and wiring diagrams current and accurate against the units we actually build. (Our engineering team designs the new schematics; you help write, maintain, and improve the documentation around them.)
  • Support the manufacturing process — Learn and help maintain our chiller build process in Odoo (our ERP) — work instructions, routings, and records — so production always works off the truth.
  • Help improve the floor — Pitch in on workstation layout, tooling, and continuous‑improvement efforts that make the build cleaner, safer, and faster.
  • Build deep product knowledge — Learn our chiller line inside and out and become the go‑to technical resource customers and the team trust.
Requirements
Required
  • A strong technical foundation — either real HVAC/R / mechanical technician experience or an engineering degree (Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related). We care more about aptitude and drive than which path you took.
  • Mechanical and electrical literacy — you can read assembly drawings and electrical schematics and understand how a machine’s electrical and mechanical sides fit together.
  • Strong computer and software skills (a must) — genuinely comfortable on a computer: writing documentation, working in spreadsheets, and picking up new software (like our ERP) quickly. A big part of this job lives on the computer.
  • Customer‑facing confidence — willing and able to pick up the phone, talk a technician through a problem, and be a calm, clear technical voice in English.
  • Hunger and ownership — you take initiative and you’re looking to grow into something bigger. We're hiring the standout, not the average.
  • On‑site in the Columbia, SC area, or willing to relocate (this is not a remote role).
Preferred / a Plus
  • Standout track record for your level — top of your class or program, certifications ahead of your peers, rapid progression, competition wins, or serious side projects.
  • HVAC/R or refrigeration experience — refrigeration circuits, compressors, condensers, evaporators, brazing, charging, controls. A real advantage; we'll teach the chiller side.
  • EPA 608 certification.
  • CAD (SOLIDWORKS, AutoCAD, Inventor) and/or electrical schematic tools.
  • Experience with an ERP/MRP system (we use Odoo — we’ll teach it).
  • Internship, co‑op, or early work experience in manufacturing, HVAC/R, or industrial equipment.

We hire for aptitude and drive, not a long résumé or a specific title. Whether you’re a standout technician or a sharp young engineer, if you have the technical fundamentals, strong computer skills, and the hunger to own a broad role and grow, we want to hear from you.

Benefits
  • Learn from the best. You’ll work directly with our most experienced technical people and get mentored on a real, complex product — the fastest way to become excellent.
  • Real ownership and a real ceiling. You own the technical documentation and product support from day one, and grow into a key technical role as we scale.
  • Ground floor of a growing company. We’re scaling fast, and as we grow, more opportunities and bigger roles will open up. Get in now, prove yourself, and grow with the company.
  • Interesting product and markets. Custom industrial chillers going into BESS, medical imaging, data centers, and process cooling.
  • Breadth. Support, documentation, manufacturing, the floor — you touch the whole product, not one narrow slice.
  • Paid Time Off.
  • Paid Holidays.
  • Retirement plan (401k) with 4% matching contribution.
  • On‑site team in Columbia, SC.
