Job description

Job Title: Mechanical Assembler
Job Description

The Mechanical Assembler is responsible for building low and medium voltage electrical switchgear cabinets from start to finish. You will interpret blueprints and work orders, gather materials and hardware, and use hand and power tools to assemble modular steel cabinets and copper bus assemblies. You will follow detailed work instructions and perform basic inspections to ensure each product meets quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret assembly, elevation drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics to understand build requirements.
  • Construct modular steel cabinets and copper bus assemblies according to engineering specifications.
  • Read and use a tape measure accurately to lay out, mark, and verify dimensions.
  • Select and gather appropriate materials, components, and hardware based on work orders and instructions.
  • Use manual hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and hand saws to perform mechanical assembly tasks.
  • Operate power tools including drills, impact tools, pneumatic torque wrenches, grinders, and power saws to cut, drill, fasten, and fit components.
  • Assemble mechanical components for low and medium voltage electrical switchgear cabinets in a job shop environment rather than a high-speed assembly line.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical symbols and schematics to correctly route and support components associated with electrical assemblies.
  • Perform basic inspections of completed assemblies to verify quality, accuracy, and compliance with specifications.
  • Use shop equipment safely and effectively while following all safety and quality procedures.
  • Perform basic math calculations, including fractions and decimals, to ensure accurate measurements and fits.
  • Communicate clearly with team members, leads, and other departments to coordinate work and resolve issues.
  • Manage time and tasks efficiently to meet production schedules and productivity expectations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by suggesting better methods, tools, or processes when appropriate.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and handle tools and equipment with care.
Essential Skills
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Mechanical Assembler, Machine Builder, Automotive Mechanic, or similar role in a job shop environment (not on an assembly line).
  • Proven ability to interpret assembly drawings, elevation drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Knowledge of electrical symbols and schematics sufficient to support assembly of electrical switchgear components.
  • Proficiency using manual hand tools, including wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, hand saws, and similar tools.
  • Proficiency using power tools such as drills, impact tools, pneumatic torque wrenches, grinders, power drills, and power saws.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately for layout and verification of dimensions.
  • Capability to use shop equipment and hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Basic math skills, including working confidently with fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to read, write, and converse fluently in English at a level that supports safe and effective performance of job duties.
  • Demonstrated focus on producing quality work and following work instructions.
  • Effective time management and productivity skills to manage workload and meet deadlines.
  • Solid problem-solving and decision-making skills in a manufacturing or assembly environment.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with team members and other departments.
  • Commitment to integrity, ethics, and customer focus in day-to-day work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Technical School education preferred but not required.
  • Experience in mechanical assembly, heavy assembly, or machine building.
  • Experience in automotive mechanics, including tasks such as oil changes and general mechanical work.
  • Experience in construction or carpentry-related tasks such as framing and use of saws and grinders.
  • Familiarity with wiring diagrams and basic electrical concepts related to mechanical assemblies.
  • Comfort working in a job shop environment where products are built from start to finish rather than on a repetitive line.
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork mindset, with an ability to thrive in an inclusive workplace.
  • Orientation toward innovation and continuous improvement, with a willingness to find new and better ways of doing tasks.
  • Demonstrated job knowledge with the ability to clearly understand and execute assigned roles and responsibilities.
