Job summary

Judson Indep School District Transportation in Converse, Texas is seeking a Mechanic to maintain and repair the district’s fleet, including gas and diesel engines and heavy equipment. The role requires strong diagnostic skills, safety awareness, and the ability to work with shop tools while ensuring compliance with district policies.

Starting immediately, the incumbent will follow PM schedules, keep accurate maintenance records, and may drive a school bus as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Possess current Texas Commercial Driver's License (Class B) or willing to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district.
  • Fingerprinting and background check satisfactory.
  • Possess or willing to obtain within 90 days a Texas State inspection license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform required maintenance to include periodic checks on tires, oil, gasoline, propane, coolant, grease, plugs, brake shoes, exhausts, lights, safety equipment, and steering systems.
  • Follow PM schedule and perform preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles to include state inspections/emission test assigned by Supervisor.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Maintain vehicle records, work orders, and parts use.
  • Report and consult with Supervisor on major repair problems.
  • Perform road calls and on-call phone duties as required.
  • Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance and work orders.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties appropriately.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to Transportation Supervisor immediately.
  • Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
  • May do welding and minor body work.
  • Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
  • Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
  • Works irregular hours as needed.
  • Drive a school bus with or without students on board.
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator's Code of Ethics.
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Responsible for the maintaining and repairing all district fleet vehicles, Gas & Diesel engines, and heavy equipment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Possess current Texas Commercial Driver's License (Class B) or willing to obtained within 90 days of employment
  • Valid Texas Driver's License, a good driving record, and proof of insurance on vehicle used to travel to district
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting and background check
  • Possess or willing to obtain within 90 days a Texas State inspection license

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to diagnose and repair fleet vehicles, Gas & Diesel engines, and heavy equipment
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment
  • Able to repair hydraulic, and airbrake systems
  • Acceptable driving record

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a vehicle mechanic
  • Experience in repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline operated vehicles and equipment

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
