Job Title: MECHANIC TECHNICIAN II
Department: Public Works Division: Fleet Services
Reports To: Shop Supervisor or Operations Manager
Pay Range: 8 Status: Full time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary:
Employees in this class perform skilled mechanical work, responsible for inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of all county equipment such as automotive vehicles, emergency equipment, and heavy construction equipment, following established mechanic trade practices.
An employee works under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor but may contact emergency management officials for critical repairs outside normal hours. The employee may be designated to handle record keeping, scheduling, and project supervision in the absence of the Shop Supervisor. This role requires discretion, independence, limited supervision, and ASE Master Mechanic certification.
Essential Functions:
- Ensure duties comply with County and Department policies.
- Manage time effectively on projects.
- Maintain regular attendance and foster a cooperative work environment.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and recondition county vehicles and equipment.
- Operate electronic test and diagnostic equipment for complex repairs.
- Diagnose, test, replace, and repair equipment components.
- Perform internal and external engine repairs.
- Assist with vehicle body repairs, painting, and glass replacement.
- Supervise repair request planning and scheduling in the absence of the Shop Supervisor.
- Maintain repair orders and service lists to organize work efficiently.
- Recommend and order parts, materials, and supplies for repairs.
- Prepare invoices and receipts for parts, repairs, and commodities, and record accounting entries.
- Research suppliers, prepare cost estimates, and check product availability.
- Respond to repair requests for emergency equipment from various county officials.
- Operate welding and metal fabrication tools.
- Maintain records of labor, equipment, and materials used.
Secondary Functions:
- Supervise maintenance of tools, equipment, facilities, and inventory.
- Operate relevant equipment as needed.
- Assist with storing, organizing, and inventorying parts and supplies.
- Participate in property inventory and stock level determinations.
- Research and develop repair practice improvements.
- Recommend new equipment purchases or modifications.
- Mount tires, clean shop areas, wash and wax vehicles.
- Transport parts, supplies, and equipment, including road and bridge equipment.
- Operate communication devices and participate in meetings.
- Work occasional overtime, including weekends and holidays, as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Equivalent combination of experience, education, and training providing the necessary skills and knowledge will be accepted.
The employee must carry a personal cell phone for county-related functions, reimbursed per policy.
Education:
- High school diploma required.
- Two years of vocational coursework in mechanics or equivalent.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License and tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire.
Certification:
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Mechanic Certification.
Experience:
- Five years repairing automotive and construction equipment.
- One year welding and metal fabrication experience.
- Two years proficiency in basic computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office).
- Extensive knowledge of county equipment mechanics for diagnostics and repairs.
- Knowledge of standard mechanic tools, practices, and equipment.
- Knowledge of internal combustion engines, diesel engines, electrical and control systems, fuel, ignition, steering, suspension, transmissions, brakes, cooling, air conditioning, and hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of computer applications and fleet management systems.
- Understanding of safety rules and procedures.
