Job summary

Utah Transit Authority is offering a four-year apprenticeship program for maintenance technicians. The program covers electrical, brakes, air systems, wheelchairs, transmissions and engines with hands-on work and class instruction, validating competency across 10 modules.

Successful applicants earn $27.13–$31.13 per hour with shift differentials, progress through wage steps, and graduate to Journeyist classification. Benefits and growth opportunities are available.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Have a Class B CDL with passenger endorsement within 60 days.
• Pass aptitude and standardized test as required by UTA.
• Be a safe driver with no more than 2 moving violations in 3 years.
• No DUI or related violations in the last 10 years.
• ONE of the following: 2-year related degree; military MOS; 1 year tech school + 1 year related experience; 6 months UTA experience.

Responsibilities

• Participate in related technical instruction and classroom training.
• Demonstrate competency across ten modules (maintenance, electrical, brakes, air systems, etc.).
• Assist advanced-skill workers in repairs using hand/power tools.
• Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs.
• Progress through apprenticeship with wage increases through the program.
• Adhere to safety, quality, and company policies.

Job Summary

Participates in related technical instruction and attends classroom instruction as required and passes written tests. This is a competency based program. Competency in the following 10 modules must be demonstrated within the time allotted; Preventative Maintenance, Electrical, Brakes, Air Systems, Air Suspension, Steering and Axles, HVAC/EAC. Wheelchairs, Transmissions and Engines. Perform manual tasks under supervision as needed. Assist advance-skill employees in complex repairs and component rebuild using hand and power tools as directed. Performs preventative maintenance inspections and associated repairs. Performs other related duties as assigned. See the Collective Bargaining Agreement for details.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Have a current, or be able to acquire a class “B” CDL with passenger endorsement within 60 days of eligibility.
• Successful candidates must haveALLof the following:
  • A current, or be able to acquire, valid Class B CDL driver’s license and associated endorsements.
  • Able to pass both an aptitude and standardized test determined by UTA. Employees will be able take both of these tests on UTA time. UTA will pay the standardized test fee, one time, for qualifying employees.
  • The required tools.
  • Be a safe driver with no more than 2 moving violations in the past 3 years.
  • Have no violations of driving under the influence of alcohol, any drug, or the combined influence of any alcohol or any drug within the last 10 years.

Successful candidates must haveONEof the following:

• Have a 2-year degree in a related field
• —OR— Have a military MOS in a related field
• —OR— Have one year of related technical school AND one year of related experience
• —OR— Have 6 months UTA experience (TVT/Helper level).

The Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee shall verify that employees entering the apprenticeship program meet the minimum qualifications.

Pay Rate: $27.13 - $31.13 per hour plus $1.00 to $1.50 shift differential depending on shift, if applicable.

This is a four year wage progression. The Apprentice shall receive an additional $.30 per hour each six months as an Apprentice up to the top Apprentice rate beginning six months after the start of the apprenticeship program.

Upon graduation, apprentices shall advance to the Journeyist classification and wage (current $36.82 per hour)

Shift:

4:00 am - 2:30 pm with Sunday/Monday/Tuesday off*

3:30 pm - 2:00 am with Sunday/Monday/Tuesday off*
