Job summary

Dickson County Schools is seeking a Mechanic (Level 2) in Dickson, Tennessee, to maintain and repair school buses and district vehicles. Qualifications
  • Must be 25 years of age or older
  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess a valid drivers' license and have not less than five years of driving experience with an unrestricted operators' license.
  • Must be willing to obtain within 60 days a CDL license with P and S endorsements and drive routes as needed. (Training provided)
  • TBI/FBI background check is required
  • DCS background check is required.
  • D.O.T. physical is required
  • Pre-employment and random drug testing required.
  • CPR and First Aid training * Annual MVR.
  • Strong computer and communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance and repair
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and physical exam
  • Ability to access and use service materials
  • Ability to operate a bus
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  1. Two years' experience in bus and vehicle fleet maintenance.
  2. Must have a working knowledge of skills in A/C, welding, air brakes (disk and drum) tire repair and electrical wiring.
  3. Engine and electrical diagnostics and the ability to perform repairs independently.
  4. Ability to maintain accurate repair records.
  5. Ability to troubleshoot and repair various types of heavy duty diesel and gas engines, Cummins and Caterpillar and Allison transmissions.
  6. Must provide and have a wide variety of tools needed for job.
  7. Road test and inspects all vehicles after repairs are made to ensure safety.
  8. Build positive relationships with all school district staff.
  9. Must be available for before and after hour service calls.
Physical Requirements

Medium exposure to bruises, cuts. Must be able to stoop, crawl, reaching hand/arm. Some heavy lifting may be required. Moderate exposure to vehicle fumes and chemicals.

Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.

Posture

Moderate standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions

Motion

Moderate walking; frequent climbing, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; moderate driving

Lifting

Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment

Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours
