Job summary

Fort Bend ISD in Houston, TX is looking for a skilled Mechanic Master to perform advanced maintenance on the district's fleet of school buses and support vehicles, following preventive maintenance schedules to ensure safe, reliable transportation. You will diagnose, repair, and overhaul diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, electrical and HVAC systems, and you may drive as a substitute when needed.

Evening/weekend on-call duties apply.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Texas CDL Driver's License, Class A or B, with P and S endorsements or must be obtained within 120 days of hire date.
  • Pass an Annual Physical (DOT) Department of Transportation.
  • Texas School Bus Driver Certification or obtain within 120 days.
  • HFC-134A certification or must be able to obtain within 1 year of hire date.
  • Valid Texas Vehicle Inspector's Certificate or must be obtained within one year of hire date.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a skilled mechanic in maintenance and repair of light, medium, and heavy duty automotive equipment.
  • Working knowledge of methods, tools, equipment and techniques used in repair and maintenance of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction and communicate clearly; maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair both routine and complex problems on various automotive systems.
  • Ability to operate a computer, keep routine records and prepare routine reports.
  • Knowledge of operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines; experience with alternative fuels preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled routine mechanical work on school buses and white fleet vehicles per preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain, repair, overhaul, and/or replace diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering, electrical, and HVAC systems; perform tune-ups and suspension work.
  • Diagnose fleet issues using diagnostic equipment, inspection, and road testing.
  • Respond to service calls, operate a tow vehicle, and assist with vehicle recovery.
  • Operate cutting and welding equipment as required.
  • On-call rotation during evenings and weekends.
  • Drive a school bus as a substitute when required.

Job Overview

The Mechanic Master will perform mechanical work at the master level of difficulty on district's yellow and white fleet vehicles in accordance with prescribed preventive maintenance schedules with emphasis on safety, cost control, and responsiveness to operational needs in order to provide safe, efficient, and reliable transportation with well maintained vehicles.

Position Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operation
  • Performs skilled routine mechanical work on school buses and white fleet vehicles in accordance to established preventive maintenance schedules
  • Maintain, repair, overhaul, and/or replace diesel and/or gasoline engines, transmissions and differentials, hydraulic and air brake systems, power steering systems, ignition and electrical systems, computer and electronic control systems, air conditioning and heating systems; perform tune-ups, suspension and drive train components
  • Proficiently diagnose fleet vehicle issues to determine the problems through the usage of diagnostic equipment, inspection and road testing
  • Respond to service calls, operate a wrecker and tow broken down vehicles
  • Operate cutting and welding equipment as required
  • Assigned On-Call rotation during evenings and weekends
  • Drive a school bus as a substitute when required
Administrative
  • Conduct vehicle inspections as required by the state and issue certified vehicle safe inspector decals
  • Comply with all shop rules and safety measures
  • Perform general housekeeping duties by keeping shop area clean, safe and orderly
  • Complete work orders, prepare routine reports, and maintain files utilizing fleet vehicle maintenance software
  • Communicate with Parts Department on needed parts, materials and supplies for vehicle repairs

  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction, and to communicate clearly and concisely and maintain good interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to diagnose and repair both routine and the more complex problems on all types of automotive vehicles and components
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools associated with the trade
  • Ability to operate a computer, keep routine records and prepare routine reports
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines; Experience with alternative fuels preferred

May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.

Additional Information
  • Work inside/outside in temperature extremes, slippery surfaces, noise , chemical exposure ( fumes, vapor, gases, dust, smoke, etc.). Work around moving machinery and moving parts, moving objects or moving vehicles. Due to nature of the position, being available after hours, weekends, and holidays is required. "On Call" situations to be expected.
