Job description

The Mechanic I is responsible for the inspection, repair, and maintenance of Macon-Bibb County automobiles and equipment. The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Inspects vehicles for safety: checking and adjusting lights, brakes, horn, steering, emission control, tires and other safety checks.
  • Services, changes and replaces oils; lubricates chassis; packs bearings; changes hydraulic fluids; and checks differential level.
  • Adjusts, repairs or replaces valves, carburetors, timing, clutch, brakes, emission system, linkages, and other adjustments.
  • Removes and replaces exhaust systems, shocks, stabilizers, brake shoes, bushings, gaskets, spark plugs, condensers, cables, wires, bulbs, and other devices.
  • Tests by use of instruments, road test, and mechanical equipment test devices.
  • Overhauls all types of brake systems, hydraulic systems, engines (gasoline and diesel), transmissions, front-ends, rear-ends, and other major repairs.
  • Services or repairs air conditioners, heaters, and related systems.
  • Makes minor electrical repairs.
  • Keeps shop equipment organized, clean, and maintained.
The Mechanic I should possess a high school degree or GED and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in light equipment or related vehicle repair; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or obtain one within six months of hire.
  • Must be able to furnish own tools.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.



The Mechanic I must be knowledgeable of the following principles, procedures, and concepts:
  • Knowledge of the principles, materials, techniques, terminology, and tools of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to diagnose defects in equipment and related vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and with members of the general public.
  • Skill in the use of the tools, machinery, and related equipment of the trade.
