Description

The Mechanic Helper will assist the Fleet Technician in making repairs and performing preventative maintenance inspections on Division vehicles and equipment.

Essential Functions

1. Assist Fleet Technicians in maintenance and repairs such as tune-ups, oil changes, checking tires and brakes, replacing spark plugs, and similar tasks.
2. Help with electrical systems such as replacing batteries, starters, and lights.
3. May assist in performing body work on automobiles and trucks.
4. Provide tools and parts; position parts for installation; jack vehicles.
5. Use various tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers in assisting Mechanics.
6. Install, remove, and repair tire chains; change tires and batteries as directed.
7. Transport vehicles; pick up and deliver parts and supplies.
8. Fill tanks of vehicles as directed; prepare mileage tickets.
9. Clean and wash vehicles, equipment, and work areas; handle salvage materials.
10. Learn and practice safety regulations and work standards.
11. Operate Division vehicles/equipment.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications

A valid driver's license from the state of residence is required. Must obtain a valid Class A Commercial driver's license from the state of residence within the trial or probationary period after entering classification. Certification from a vocational school, technical institute, or automotive program is preferred.

Education

High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

Previous experience as a Mechanic Helper or a similar role is required.

Additional Information

Must successfully complete Physical Abilities Test and Placement/Performance Exercises. Physical Demands include working inside and outside of the shop, exposure to gasoline, oil, and solvents; standing for extended periods, climbing, noise, dust, and dirt; heavy lifting/carrying up to 100lbs. Knowledge of vehicle repair, excellent mechanical skills, ability to follow instructions, and use power and hand tools are essential. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to read service and repair manuals, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner are required.
