Job summary

Rice CISD in Altair, Texas seeks a Mechanic Helper to support bus maintenance and repair operations in the Transportation department.

The role assists mechanics with vehicle repairs, tires, fluids, and safety checks, and requires a valid Texas CDL or willingness to obtain one, plus prior experience and the ability to lift heavy parts. Nonexempt, full-time, on-site with occasional irregular hours.

Qualifications

• Valid Texas CDL or willingness to obtain one.
• 1 year experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance.
• Able to diagnose minor mechanical problems with supervision.
• Able to operate tools and equipment for vehicle repair.
• Capable of lifting heavy parts/equipment.
• Able to pass alcohol and drug testing requirements.
• Able to pass bus driver safety training.
• Cleaner driving record; able to operate a bus.

Responsibilities

• Repair seat surfaces on buses and replace tires, bulbs, and accessories as needed.
• Perform mechanical repairs under supervision of a mechanic.
• Disassemble simple components and clean parts for reassembly.
• Assist mechanics with lifting and maneuvering heavy parts.
• Service vehicles per preventive maintenance schedule; rotate tires; change oil and filters; lubricate parts.
• Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance.
• Inspect, repair, rotate tires, and clean shop areas.
• Perform welding and minor body work as needed.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) or willingness to attain

Special Knowledge/Skills

Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs with supervision

Ability to operate tools and equipment involved in vehicle repair

Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to pass required bus driver safety training

Major Responsibilities And Duties

Maintenance and Repairs

• Repair seat surfaces on buses as needed.
• Perform mechanical repairs or work under supervision of a mechanic to repair or replace tires, bulbs, and accessories.
• Perform visual inspection of vehicles and report any defects or repairs as need.
• Disassemble simple components and clean parts for reassembly.
• Assist mechanics with lifting and maneuvering heavy parts and components.
• Request parts and tools for mechanics as needed.
• Service vehicles according to established preventative maintenance schedule. Rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels.
• Help in maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
• Inspect, repair, change, and rotate tires.
• Clean shop floors, stalls, driveways, tools, and equipment.
• Do welding and perform minor body work.

Service

• Fuel buses and maintain accurate records of use.
• Check tire air pressure and fill as needed.
• Check oil and other fluid levels and replace fluids as needed.
• Clean outside of bus including glass, lights, and mirrors.
• Sweep and clean inside of buses as needed.

Safety

• Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to established safety procedures.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
• Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

Driving

• Operate Bus as needed and be familiar with bus routes
• Assist in training new drivers.

Other

• Operate buses and vehicles as needed, including driving buses into shop area for work.
• Record use of gas and mileage for buses daily.
• Work irregular hours as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Equipment Used

Wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, torque wrench, jack, and lift equipment. School bus and district vehicles.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
