Job summary

Ricecisd Transportation is seeking a Mechanic Helper to assist in maintaining school buses and other vehicles. You will support mechanics with repairs, inspections, tire work, and preventive maintenance under supervision.

The role requires a Texas Class B CDL or willingness to obtain, one year of minor vehicle repair experience, and the ability to lift heavy parts. Driving duties may be involved.

Qualifications

• Education/Certification: Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) or willingness to attain.
• Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs with supervision.
• Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to operate tools and equipment involved in vehicle repair.
• Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts.
• Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to pass alcohol and drug test.
• Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to pass required bus driver safety training.
• Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to operate bus.
• Experience: One year experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Repair seat surfaces on buses as needed.
• Perform mechanical repairs or work under supervision of a mechanic to repair or replace tires, bulbs, and accessories.
• Perform visual inspection of vehicles and report any defects or repairs as need.
• Disassemble simple components and clean parts for reassembly.
• Assist mechanics with lifting and maneuvering heavy parts and components.
• Request parts and tools for mechanics as needed.
• Service vehicles according to established preventative maintenance schedule. Rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels.
• Help in maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
• Inspect, repair, change, and rotate tires.
• Clean shop floors, stalls, driveways, tools, and equipment.
• Do welding and perform minor body work.
• Fuel buses and maintain accurate records of use.
• Check tire air pressure and fill as needed.
• Check oil and other fluid levels and replace fluids as needed.
• Clean outside of bus including glass, lights, and mirrors.
• Sweep and clean inside of buses as needed.
