Job summary

South Bend Community School Corp Vehicle Maintenance Facility in South Bend, Indiana, seeks a Mechanic B– VMF Mechanic Helper to repair and maintain school buses and other district vehicles. Immediate start; 40 hours weekly with overtime as needed, under the VMF Mechanic Foreman and Director of Transportation.

Requirements include CDL-B, ASE preferred, five years of diesel/heavy-duty repair, a high school diploma or GED, and tools.

Qualifications

• ASE Certification preferred.

• Five years of diesel/heavy-duty engine repair experience.

• Technical schooling in automotive/diesel repair or demonstrated mechanical aptitude.

• Able to guide other mechanics and work without supervision.

Responsibilities

• Maintain exhaust, electrical, hydraulic, braking, heating and cooling systems.
• Perform regular preventive maintenance; grease/oil changes.
• Provide guidance to drivers when appropriate.
• Perform related work as required.

Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Mechanic B– VMF Mechanic Helper

SALARY RANGE: $24.00- $29.00.

CONTRACT LENGTH: 12 months

40 hours as assigned. Overtime as required

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: VMF Mechanic Foreman

Director of Transportation

POSITION SUMMARY:

Repair and maintenance of school buses and other vehicles owned by or leased to the South Bend Community School Corporation.

DUTIES:

Repair and replacement, as required, of engine and drivetrain components (gasoline and diesel). Exhaust system maintenance. Electrical system maintenance and/or repair. Hydraulic system maintenance and/or repair. Brake system maintenance and/or repair hydraulic and air. Heating and cooling system maintenance and/or repair. Regular preventive maintenance program, grease and oil change, etc. Provide guidance and direction to drivers when appropriate.Perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ASE Certification preferred. CDL-Class B license required. Have a minimum of five current years of experience in diesel and heavy-duty engine repair and maintenance. Must be a high school graduate or hold a GED. Have attended and completed a technical school for automotive repair and diesel engine repair and/or necessary mechanical aptitude and experience in diesel and automotive repair. Experience working on trucks and/or buses with GVW 10,000 pounds or more. Applicants must provide a resume of their work experience and references from employers or instructors concerning their qualifications. Must have their own mechanical tools required for vehicle repair. Demonstrated ability to speak and write understandably and perform required mathematical calculations. Be able to provide on-the-job assistance and direction to other mechanics. Be able to work without supervision; self-motivated.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Requires the following physical abilities and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 70 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, dust, toxic waste, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
