The City of New Haven is seeking a skilled Mechanic to perform maintenance and repair on various vehicles and heavy equipment. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, conducting repairs, and ensuring operational efficiency. Ideal candidates will have automotive mechanic experience and a valid Connecticut driver's license. A tool allowance and uniforms are provided, with opportunities for advancement after one year.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level involving maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel drives, heavy equipment, and construction equipment. Employees in this class are responsible for performing skilled repair tasks on trucks, passenger vehicles, and heavy equipment such as payloaders, excavators, tractors, rollers, low-bed trailers, graders, refuse vehicles, and street sweepers. Assignments are given orally or through general written work orders from a supervisor. Work is reviewed through tests and the operational condition of equipment after repairs.
The Garage operates in two shifts:
Mechanics receive an annual tool allowance and uniforms. Employees hired as Mechanic B automatically advance to Mechanic A after one year of employment, provided they possess a #102 driver’s license with air brake endorsement. The salary for Mechanic A is currently $36.90/hr, totaling approximately $77,047 annually.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

High school graduation plus 1 to 3 years of full trade automotive mechanic experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training providing the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a non-tested, 'General Fund' position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union. Hires do not contribute to Social Security but contribute 9% of pay to the City pension. Employment is contingent upon passing background checks, physical and drug screening, and a 120-day probation period. CDL holders are subject to random drug tests and FMCSA requirements. The City maintains a Drug-Free Workplace Policy, including pre-employment drug tests.
