Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level involving maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel drives, heavy equipment, and construction equipment. Employees in this class are responsible for performing skilled repair tasks on trucks, passenger vehicles, and heavy equipment such as payloaders, excavators, tractors, rollers, low-bed trailers, graders, refuse vehicles, and street sweepers. Assignments are given orally or through general written work orders from a supervisor. Work is reviewed through tests and the operational condition of equipment after repairs.

The Garage operates in two shifts:

  1. 1st shift: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
  2. 2nd shift: 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Mechanics receive an annual tool allowance and uniforms. Employees hired as Mechanic B automatically advance to Mechanic A after one year of employment, provided they possess a #102 driver’s license with air brake endorsement. The salary for Mechanic A is currently $36.90/hr, totaling approximately $77,047 annually.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform general overhaul and repair work on light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel motors, and other automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Repair and replace shock absorbers, brakes, transmissions; adjust clutches; check wheel alignment; and repair/install hydraulic controls.
  • Tune motors using standard testing equipment.
  • Perform diversified electrical work, including installing batteries, repairing lights, and fixing generators and starters.
  • Conduct road tests to locate defects and verify repairs, utilizing testing devices such as ammeters, volt meters, and gauges.
  • Assist in inspecting and replacing parts of complex gasoline and diesel engines, including valves, pistons, bearings, transmissions, and power takeoff systems.
  • Assist with welding tasks, including electric arc, acetylene, MIG, TIG, and stick welding, for chassis straightening, bumper repairs, and hardfacing shovel teeth, grader blades, etc.
  • Complete daily repair logs and perform related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

High school graduation plus 1 to 3 years of full trade automotive mechanic experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training providing the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Recognize, diagnose, locate, and repair defects in automotive and diesel equipment.
  • Understand standard practices and equipment of automotive mechanics.
  • Know the principles of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair methods for heavy trucks and construction equipment.
  • Be familiar with electrical vehicle maintenance.
  • Understand occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical defects.
  • Adapt tools and parts to repair problems.
  • Use diagnostic software and online ordering tools proficiently.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid Connecticut driver’s license, with the ability to maintain it.
  • Obtain a CDL with Air Brake Endorsement within 12 months of employment.
  • Advance from Mechanic B to Mechanic A after one year and possession of a CDL.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a non-tested, 'General Fund' position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with Local 424, Unit 34, United Public Service Employees Union. Hires do not contribute to Social Security but contribute 9% of pay to the City pension. Employment is contingent upon passing background checks, physical and drug screening, and a 120-day probation period. CDL holders are subject to random drug tests and FMCSA requirements. The City maintains a Drug-Free Workplace Policy, including pre-employment drug tests.
