Job summary

The University of Rochester is seeking a highly skilled tradesperson to fabricate, assemble and repair mechanical systems at our Rochester, NY campus. You will read blueprints and sketches, set up and run machines, and diagnose equipment troubles under supervision.

The role requires comfort with varied tasks, safety compliance, and willingness to work irregular hours. We value a strong apprenticeship background and 5–6 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent educational training.
• Able to read and write English; to use shop mathematics, charts, tables and handbook formulae; to read and interpret specialized drawings and diagrams.
• Completion of approved apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of formal training and experience.
• Experience should total a minimum of 5-6 years including apprenticeship time.
• Required to use and/or wear safety equipment specified or provided by the University in the manner prescribed.
• Required to observe and follow safe work practices at all times as specified by OSHA or other regulations.
• Depending upon functional area, may require a valid motor vehicle operator's license and the ability to operate vehicles in a troublefree, safe and skillful manner.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours when assigned.
• Reachable by telephone at irregular hours for call-in duty.
• Must keep current phone number and address on file with Trade Supervisor and Department Office.

Responsibilities

• Lays out, plans, and completes all mechanical fabrication and assembly assignments with a minimum of supervision.
• Sets up and operates own machines as required.
• Works from blue prints, sketches, wiring diagrams, and verbal instructions or from experience in completing mechanical assignments and/or diagnosing apparatus, machine, facility, and/or equipment troubles.
• May assemble complicated mechanical components, or complete models, instruments, apparatus and equipment. (Parts or components may be made by a machinist).
• May specialize in maintaining mechanical equipment or apparatus in good and efficient working order. May include some electrical components of the equipment such as switches and control panels.
• May perform necessary electrical maintenance work on elevators, hoists, conveyors, and electric motors.
• May perform basic and routine level work commonly assigned to other trades (e.g., carpentry or electrical tasks) where performance of such tasks is incidental to performance of the mechanical work or is required in response to an emergency situation.
• Performs other duties requiring comparable skill and responsibility as directed.

The referenced pay range represents the first and last step pay rates for this job, as set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Individual pay will be set in accordance with terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities:

Fabricates, assembles, repairs and/or maintains mechanical apparatus, machines, facilities and/or equipment. Requires advanced knowledge and skill to perform advanced machinery and bench operations. Works to close tolerances.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED
Under general supervision of departmental supervisor.

HOURS
Monday - Friday 7am-3:30pm

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED: No formal supervisory authority. May coordinate activities of lower classified trades personnel. MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED: A wide variety of hand bench and machine shop tools such as precision gauges, gears, fixtures and lathes.
