Job summary

The City of Stockbridge seeks a skilled fleet mechanic responsible for preventive and restorative maintenance of the city's gasoline, diesel, and mechanical equipment. Duties include diagnosing problems, performing tune-ups, replacing brakes, and servicing systems on vehicles such as backhoes, dump trucks, and pumps.

The ideal candidate has at least three years of related experience, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a valid Georgia driver's license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required, supplemented by three (3) years of related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job; and a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Diagnoses and determines the extent of mechanical problems using shop equipment and replaces or rebuilds equipment when needed.
• Diagnoses, services, and repairs gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment including engines, fuel systems, hydraulics, brakes, and cooling systems.
• Performs tune-ups, inspects and replaces brakes, belts, hoses, tires, and air conditioning components.
• Maintains and repairs engines, transmissions, fuel systems, braking, climate control, and hydraulic systems per manufacturer specs.
• Maintains and repairs wheeled and tracked equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, tractors, and street sweepers.
• Trains and leads assigned employees, inspects work, and ensures safety and adherence to standards.
• Receives work orders, plans maintenance projects, and schedules priorities.
• Performs preventive maintenance including lubrication, greasing, and belt/ hose checks to minimize downtime.

This class performs skilled preventative and restorative maintenance of the City's fleet and equipment, including inspecting, diagnosing, overhauling, repairing, and maintaining gasoline, diesel, and mechanical equipment and machinery such as backhoes, mini excavators, automobiles, dump trucks, pumps (including water, hydraulic, and air pumps), generators, and air compressors. Work performed ranges in difficulty from routine part replacement and repairs to major repairs. This is a fully seasoned, skilled level capable of independently carrying out most assignments typical of the discipline.

Requirements

Major Duties:

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below:

• Diagnoses and determines the extent of mechanical problems using various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, and specialized tools, and replaces or rebuilds equipment based upon the cost and quality of equipment operation.
• Diagnoses, services, and repairs a wide variety of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment including engines, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, air brakes, hydraulic brakes, air conditioning systems, cooling systems, body and chassis, small engines (mowers, weed eaters and chain saws), pumps, generators, and trailers.
• Performs automotive and equipment maintenance including: performing tune-ups; inspecting and replacing brakes; inspecting and replacing belts and hoses; replacing and adjusting headlights; replacing tires; servicing air conditioners; replacing fuel and water pumps, radiators, thermostats, etc.
• Services engines, transmissions, differentials, fuel systems, braking systems, climate control systems, and hydraulic systems by changing fluids and filters and flushing systems, in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications.
• Maintains and repairs both wheeled and tracked light, medium, and heavy equipment, such as backhoes, mini excavators, tractors, dump trucks, bucket trucks, and street sweepers.
• Trains assigned employees in maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques; leads, assigns, and inspects the work of subordinates and participates in all associated work; verifies work performed for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
• Receives work orders and plans and coordinates routine or recurring maintenance and repair projects.
• Establishes priorities and schedules work, allowing for unscheduled projects.
• Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including lubricating, greasing, and checking belts and hoses, as needed to minimize downtime for equipment and employees.
