Job summary

Laramie County Government seeks a skilled Sr. Heavy Equipment Mechanic under supervision to inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles and machinery in the Public Works Department. CDL is preferred or obtainable within a year, and you must provide your own tools. Work involves shop and field duties with adherence to safety protocols and county policies.

Job description

Under direct supervision, performs complex maintenance and repair work on vehicles, equipment and other motorized machinery in the Public Works Department under the guidance of the Sr. Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Essential Job Functions:

• Inspects, maintains and repairs vehicles and heavy equipment in the repair shop and at job sites in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
• Assist in the diagnoses and repairs heavy equipment engines, transmissions, power trains, electronic systems, braking, and steering.
• Diagnoses and repairs component systems and sub-systems for electrical, fuel supply systems, hydraulic systems, and engine cooling systems.
• Assist with fabricating metal and tools, building and modifying metal components.
• Lubricates vehicles and changes oil and filters.
• Maintains records of repairs made, work orders and time worked.
• Inspects and cleans equipment and facility; reports maintenance needs and deficiencies to supervisor.
• Purchases parts and supplies within scope of authority.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years of vehicle, aviation or equipment maintenance experience OR a Diesel Mechanic/Technology Certification; OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, specific to this line of work. CDL preferred, or the ability to obtain it within a year of hire. Provides and maintains the appropriate set of tools to perform the functions of the position.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of County policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, power trains, and mechanical and electrical systems.
• Knowledge of Federal, state and county safety rules and regulations, including first aid, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations, and drug and alcohol testing guidelines.
• Knowledge of the procedures for safe handling, disposal and storage of all hazardous materials.
• Knowledge of safety standards and practices in a shop environment.
• Skill in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, brake, fuel and electrical defects in a wide variety of automotive and heavy duty truck equipment.
• Skill in maintaining equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
• Skill in metal fabricating and adapting parts and tools to specific repairs.
• Skill in reading technical manuals and specifications, including wiring schematics.
• Skill in the safe use of tools, materials and equipment used in vehicle and equipment maintenance.
• Skill in maintaining accurate service records.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with County staff.
• Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
