Job summary

MEB General Contractors is offering a Summer 2027 Internship Program – Project Engineer Track in Hampton, VA. The position provides hands-on experience on active projects in the field and office, under the guidance of project managers and superintendents.

You will learn project documentation, subcontractor coordination, material procurement, scheduling, quality control, safety, and other essential functions while contributing to real project work and a capstone project at the program’s end.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a four-year degree in Construction Management, Building Construction, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Spend time in the field learning construction methods, quality standards, safety, and daily site operations.
• Assist with project management processes: submittals, RFIs, change orders, material purchasing, and tracking.
• Review and coordinate submittals from suppliers and subcontractors.
• Support tracking of job progress and updates to project schedules.
• Participate in project meetings and provide progress updates on assigned tasks.
• Communicate deliveries, field activities, submittals, RFIs, change orders, and other needs to subcontractors.

The MEB Summer 2027 Internship Program - Project Engineer Track provides aspiring construction professionals with hands-on experience supporting active projects in both the field and office.

As an intern, you will work alongside Project Managers, Project Engineers, Superintendents, and field teams to learn how complex construction projects are planned, coordinated, and delivered. You will gain exposure to project documentation, subcontractor coordination, material procurement, scheduling, quality control, safety, and other essential project management functions.

MEB's internship program is designed to help you connect what you are learning in the classroom to real-world construction. Your specific responsibilities will depend on your assigned project, its current phase, and the needs of the project team.

Throughout the summer, you may also gain exposure to other areas of the company, including estimating, field operations, and site supervision. At the conclusion of the program, you will complete a capstone project demonstrating your understanding of the project you supported and the experience you gained.

What You'll Do

• Spend time in the field learning how MEB crews and subcontractors perform their work while observing construction methods, quality standards, safety requirements, and daily site operations.
• Assist with project management processes, including submittals, RFIs, change orders, material purchasing and tracking, progress documentation, quality control inspections, and project closeout.
• Review and help coordinate submittals from subcontractors, suppliers, and manufacturers.
• Support the Project Manager and Superintendent with tracking job progress and updating project schedules.
• Participate in project meetings and be prepared to provide updates on assigned responsibilities.
• Communicate with subcontractors and suppliers regarding deliveries, field activities, submittals, RFIs, change orders, and other project needs.
• Assist with preparing, submitting, and tracking change orders involving owners, subcontractors, and suppliers.
• Help prepare and organize documentation for permits, special inspections, utility coordination, and Miss Utility requests.
• Gain exposure to estimating, project engineering, field supervision, and the collaboration required to successfully deliver a construction project.
• Complete a capstone project summarizing your experience and key takeaways from the internship.

What We're Looking For

• Currently pursuing a four-year degree in Construction Management, Building Construction, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another related field.

The anticipated starting hourly rate for this position is $22 to $26 an hour. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, certifications, technical skills, internal equity, and business needs.
