Pennsylvania College of Technology is seeking a Mathematics Instructional Specialist to schedule and deliver supplemental instruction, small-group tutoring, and math workshops in the Tutoring Center on campus. Job description

Overview

The Mathematics Instructional Specialist is responsible for scheduling and regularly providing supplemental instruction, small group and appointment tutoring sessions, workshops relating to math success, and for tutoring math in the Tutoring Center. This individual will also assist with the collection and reporting of program data. This is an on-site position.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education with a math emphasis or other related discipline. Required
  • Master's Degree in Education. Preferred

EXPERIENCE

  • Two (2) years teaching or tutoring experience preferably with at-risk students. Required
  • Work experience in college developmental education. Preferred

ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Ability to become familiar with a variety of mathematics content areas, learning theory, and study skills theory. Required
  • Knowledge of learning theory, learning styles, and educational methods. Required
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form. Required
  • Functional ability with microcomputers or aptitude to learn. Required
Responsibilities
  • Schedule and conduct supplemental instruction and specialized study sessions for students in college-level math courses.
  • Recruit program participants via classroom presentations, posters, flyers, etc.
  • Attend class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read assigned materials including text(s) and supplementary readings as needed.
  • Review and clarify course requirements with students and assist them with course materials.
  • Prepare handouts for study sessions as necessary and assist students with supplemental learning materials: audio-visual aids, computer software, and packets.
  • Provide small group tutoring for students in developmental math courses.
  • Provide individual tutoring scheduled through the appointment system and offer academic assistance/instruction on a walk-in or scheduled basis in the Tutoring Center.
  • Complete individual tutorial and contact reports.
  • Collect attendance data from all group sessions.
  • Follow-up on math related Early Alert and other student assistance referrals.
  • Attend training sessions and staff meetings to 1) address problems encountered, student needs, etc. and 2) participate in and contribute to department discussions & implementation of programming and goal-planning.
  • Attend in-house and/or off-campus conferences/workshops to maintain practical expertise in study skills, resources, and success strategies. -Develop and provide math, academic, and study skills to individuals and groups through workshops (face-to-face or online), classroom presentations, and tutor training/orientations.
  • Act as a resource for student and professional tutors, helping with questions about course information, instructor preferences/processes, and learning theory.
  • Develop and/or update self-instructional packets in areas related to academic expertise.
  • Identify academic problems as they surface and consult with manager or other appropriate department staff.-Maintain contact throughout the semester with course faculty to obtain feedback and to review student and program progress.
  • Provide tutoring support for summer sessions and summer advantage programming
  • Assist in upholding professional integrity, Title IX standards, and FERPA compliance within the Tutoring Center
  • Support additional programing initiated by Tutoring Services for special events such as Proofreading Week, Pi Day, Midterm and Finals study days, and specialty workshops.
  • Attend math faculty department meetings and in-service activities when appropriate.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administer questionnaires to students in selected courses to determine program interest and program success.
  • Assist in the selection and procurement of educational materials.
  • Maintain a knowledge of all Tutoring Services resources and refer students to those resources as needed
  • Work with tutoring staff to create a welcoming and inclusive math study space.
  • Collaborate with Hudock Center staff, academic schools, student groups and organizations, and other College departments to help plan, coordinate, advertise and facilitate tutoring events and marketing efforts as it relates to the role.
  • Collaborate with relevant campus offices including the Math department, Hudock Center for Academic Excellence staff, and Tutoring Services to create programming that meets the needs of special student populations.

Based on minimum education and experience qualifications the hourly range is $26.09 - $30.80.
