Job summary

St. John's University in Queens seeks a part-time Math Teacher to deliver instruction for pre-algebra, algebra and geometry within the Liberty Partnerships Program, supporting high school students who pursue college readiness.

The role requires a Master's in Education, NYS certification or college teaching experience, and at least three years of teaching at secondary or collegiate level. Hours are Saturdays, 10:00 am–1:00 pm, with some hybrid options; salary is $50 per hour.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist in coordinating tutorial services; conducting tutorial training; and supervising tutorial staff.
  • Exhibit great classroom management skills that enable learning for all students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Director.

ProgramDescription:

Liberty Partnerships Program The Liberty Partnerships Program is sponsored by the New York State Education Department and St John's University. It is designed to provide support services to high school students who are identified as having the potential to pursue a college education but need assistance to complete secondary school. The program provides a range of services designed to increase academic skill development, motivation to succeed, and foster the personal development of the students in the program. These year-round services include: tutoring, counseling, mentoring, development courses, and social and enrichment activities. The program consists of a Director, 1 Program Coordinator, 1 part-time Graduate Assistant, and a team of part-time teachers and college tutors/mentors. The Math Teacher is responsible for providing instruction and tutorial services in mathematics during the LPPA Saturday and after-school program located at John Adams High School or the SJU campus.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction in the area of mathematics (pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry) and;

  • Assist in coordinating tutorial services; conducting tutorial training; and supervising tutorial staff;

Competencies, Education, Experience
  • Master's Degree in Education;
  • State certification or college teaching experience;
  • Three years of teaching experience at the secondary or collegiate level;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Knowledge of NYS Learning Standards and Common Core;
  • Ability to inspire and motivate youth;
  • Deep-rooted passion in serving students and helping them achieve their goals;
  • Preference given to an educator who currently serves as a full-time teacher at the target high school.
Hours
  • 6 hours weekly, some evenings or weekends required (some hybrid remote options may be available via Zoom for evening or weekend parent meetings and/or workshops only).
  • Evenings or weekends are substituted when necessary and are not an addition to the regular work schedule-10 hours weekly max.

PositionType: Part-Time (Saturdays only, 10:00 am - 1:00pm).
