Job summary

Job Title

Math Long-Term Substitute Teacher

General Description

The long-term substitute teacher is responsible for providing classroom coverage for a teacher who is absent for an extended period of time. The long-term substitute works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher during his or her absence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaches content and skills in subject area utilizing curriculum designated by Richmond Public Schools and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instructs students in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Richmond Public Schools.
  • Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course/SOL standards.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records including attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other record‑keeping activities as necessary.
  • Evaluates each student’s progress in meeting the course standards.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health, and attitude problems.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors about student progress.
  • Supervises students in assigned out‑of‑classroom activities during the working day.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  • Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices.
Qualifications
  • Completion of 60 hours of college credits from an accredited college or university.
  • Bilingual skills, including Spanish, are a plus.
Working Conditions and Requirements
  • Occasional movement of students in wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level, and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
